View Full Version : How is the windshield mounted to the body

I am planning to help my friend change the windshield on his 1968 Camaro. I have found the moldings, the clips, the windshield and the clip removal tools in the restoration parts companies.
I am not clear if the windshield is held by a rubber gasket to the body or if it is sticked by some special adhesive, for there is a molding covering the whole joint.
Does somebody here know about this?

The windshield is held in butyl 2 way tape. After you remove the molding, get a long skinny shank ice pick, and from the inside of the car at one of the top corners, carefully stick the ice pick in until you see it protruding from the outside. Then get some piano wire or guitar string, (Preferrably one of the heavier gage strings). Insert the string through the hole you made with the ice pick. With your friend in the car and you outside the car, wrap your respective ends of your wire/ string around a big screw driver, and gently start sawing the seal out. Just be careful not to crack the glass and or chip the paint.

Thanks Ryatt-motion. I appreciate your advise.
Is this butyl tape a common item that can be purchased at any company that specializes in windshield installing or would it be better leaving the installation to the experts? It would be very disappointing for the windshield to have a leak afterwards.

The butyl seal is awsome and if applied correctly will give youa leak free seal for years to come. You can get it from the Eastwood Co. or any competent glass company. You have to make sure to clean the surrounding area real good, then apply the butyl primer. Do that, and you should be A-OK! BTW welcome to the site!

I don't think they have Napa's in Guatemala. Are you in Guatemala City Ricardo?

We do have a NAPA auto parts store locally. I will check with them. I buy some stuff from Eastwood too. As long as it is not considered hazardous material i can get it here in about a week.
I am in Guatemala city, Lyle.
By the way, I assume the rear window is mounted in the same fashion, right?

I did a search and found the instructions for the removal of the windshield metal moldings that you posted a couple of days ago, Rick. Great info too.

They have Napa there eh? Cool. I know it's a big city. I was there in Guatemala for a couple months in 1998.

when removing the winsheild with the string take your time and go slow. Once you get it going your gonna want to speed up, but keep it slow, the wire will melt if you go to fast!
