Help my friend pick an exhaust.

Car: 1986 Trans Am with a 4 barrel 305. Right now he has a Flow Master 40 series muffler. He wants it louder, so I suggested taking it to Meinike and just putting pipe from the cat back, with no muffler, just unrestricted pipe. He's thinking about it. We don't see too many cat back systems out there, can you suggest any? Thanks for the help.

hollow out the Cat......will be unbelieveably loud.

He can go look at Jeg's, they have a racing/high flow cat for his car, and it's nice. Also, he could always go to a 80's series flowmaster, it's considered the most aggresive out of their mufflers that fit our cars. Just a thought though.

Yep like Lou stated I would just get a cutout that way he can keep is exhaust the way it is and when he wants it louder he can just open the cutout.

We were gong to gut the cat but someone said you could face jailtime, I didn't believe him, but my friend didn't want to do that. I had also mentioned a cutout, hopefully he'll chose that one. Thanks for the help.

YOu can gut the cat, as long as it's still installed. lots of people do it, and the cops can't say anything due to the cat is still technically on. If you live in a state with emissions though, that will be a problem.

Yup a hallow cat will give hime a better sound, or if you wanted to spend some cash buy longtube headers and run true duels (with hallow cats or no cats)

Hooker makes good cat-backs for that car so does edelbrock. but if he wants it loud then tell him to custom make a catback and reduce the bends in the whole system and use a race series muffler since those are staight(sp) through design. he can keep the cat and use a straighter y-pipe and use straight pipe to the axel and put a rae muffler in the intermediate pipe and go ove the axel or dump it in front of the axel and that will be plenty loud.use 3" pipe to to reall help performance and get a nice crisp sound out of the car.

I have found on thirdgen.org a duel exhaust system for shorty headers that is ran like the factory system is .. I will do some reasearch tonight for the part number from summit .. but I think it was only $150 shipped .. pipe was aluminzied and manderel bent and 2 1/2''. That would be something to keep in mind and just toss some dynomax bullets on there .. now that would wake the dead lol
