in all honesty guys....which motor is better.... the ls1 or lt1? ive been looking at camaros for about 6 months and cant really decide which motor is better...i no that the ls1 motor comes stock with more horsepower but which one is better for building up and durability? and which one can be made faster?

this will get a few people riled up..........
But trust me.....the LS1 is the better engine in terms of power/fuel economy/durability/emissions. In fact, as much as I love the LT1...and particularly the sound of the LT1......it's simply an older engine.

1998sscamaro, that was the brand manager for Camaro and Firebird speaking there (say hi Scott!), his opinion is widely believed on the Site to be gospel. This is a subject for debate brought up again and again and I'm sure if you performed a search feature, you'll find a wealth of inforation backing up both sides.
Personally, I've owned cars with both the LT1 and LS1 engines, honestly I like the LS1 more. I think it's easier to work on, more reliable, responds better to mods, and has more potential than an LT1, but again, it's more a matter of personal preference. There aren't too many people out there that have started with an LS1 and then gone back to the LT1, but there are a lot of people who have converted to the LS1 and have never gone back, that should speak for itself.
Ls1 hands down all that they say is true I will always be an lt1 guy though

What number is your 96 SS? I don't meet to many people out there who have one. I got #207. They are pretty rare.
Also hands down LS1 wins in the matter that it responds much better to mods. Either engine CAN be made faster then the other for the right amont of money but if your looking at best bang for your buck LS1. My problem was a found a 96 SS which is rare compared to any of the other SS's... only like 2410. I owned a 96 RS before so i was in love with this body style rather then the new generation & it had everything i was looking for. Leather, stick, t-tops, all slp options etc. Im still on the look out to get an LS1 also, then my 96 SS will be garaged for most its time to collect some value :D
P.S. LT1's do sound better but sound doesn't mean everything. LT1's just sound more raw to me.
Ok Fantaz tell these poor fools why the LT1 is better, cmon stick up for us *z28rocks*
Seriously you can't argue with Fantaz's numbers, that thing is FAST.

I was under the impression that LT1s were better for building up as they have a cast iron block rather than all aluminum like the LS1.
Also the LT1s sell for under half the price of an LS1 ;)

LS-1 all the way. GM switched and stuck w/the ls-1 for a reason. I too have owned many lt-1's and ls-1's and still own one of each. I like the lt-1, but the ls-1 is a better overall engine IMO.

Ok, LS1 is the better motor. But the LT1 isn't too far behind. Now with that said, I'm a LT1 owner. Reason, no car payment, can through a ton of cash at it, produce the same end results and in my opinion the LT1 cars look better. (ducks for fear of the oncoming 2x4) Both groups of engines have people running them that have some scary horsepower. But from the last I have heard, LT1 is still top dog in the the quest for quickest in the 1/4. Both have their share of problems but considering what package they came in, I'll still love them both.

i'd take an LS1 any day of the week, hands down. BUT I drove one and they simply do NOT have the low-end grunt that my LT1 has. On top of that, my LT1 isn't even making as much low-end torque as it could because of my exhaust choices.

Yeah, gotta love the LT1's low end. But those damn LS1's just keep pullin. I love my LT1, but I'd rather have an LS1

That's cool as hell!! You ask a question about camaros and you get a response from none other than the brand manager of Camaro and Corvette!!!
I agree with what's been said so far. Before I had my LS1, I had an LT1. I loved the LT1 and it did sound better. As it was stated, it's more of a personal choice. But, my vote obviously goes for the LS1.

They are both great motors, and like anything else when something new comes along it has been R and D quite a bit so its going to be better than the older model in some points. The LS1 was designed much better than the LT1 but here again you have to look at the length of time the LT1 was available and this gave GM the time to look into the future and build a better powerplant. Its no different than seeing the LS2 out now and the LS7 :) I will stick with my LT1 because I know it like the back of my hand and its only going to get faster :D

I love the way my LT1 sounds compared to my LS1. I also love the low end my LT1 has compared to the LS1. BUT DAMNIT...The LS1 keeps pullin on the top end. Maybe we can put the 2 together and have a kick arse engine! :Reaper:

Wow, not too many fans of the LT1 on this site are there?
I've never understood what people mean when they say the LS1 has "more potential" than the LT1.
More potential at what?
Both engines have powered car's into the 13's. Into the 12's. Into the 11's and even the 10's. All the way down to 1000+ HP 8 second race car's. So how anybody can come to the conclusiom that the LS1 has "more potential" is beyond me. It's simply not true. Nothing more than a rumour made up by arrogent, !#*!#*!#*!#*y, LS1 owners. (Not all LS1 owners are this way mind you so don't assume I'm saying this about all LS1 owners. I'm not.)
There are no records the LS1 has set that LT1's haven't been doing for years now (the LT1 has had a good 5-6 year head start)
Infact, I'd be willing to wager there are far more LT1's running single digit E.T's than LS1's.
I mean, let's face it, both engine's are capable of making HP well beyond what 99.9% of us would ever be able to handle.
To those who say the LS1 is "much easier" to work on...I've worked on both car's before and feel that they're BOTH roughly the same as far as ease of modifying/working on, which is to say they're both a pain in the @ss since they're half way hidden under the dash  A header install for example, is a total pain on either engine :)
Stock for stock, or mod for mod, the LS1 SHOULD be the faster of the two (depending on driver skill of coarse) but in the real world you're not always going to be racing stock for stock or mod for mod.
Once you tear into either engine and do heads/cam/ stroker build-up's or slap on a Turbo or blower, the sky's the limit and any perceived "advantage" people seem to think the LS1 has, goes right out the window. Trust me, I've seen stroker LT1's put out number's that would make the most die-hard LS1 fan poop their pants. It's all about the money people.
How fast you wanna go depends on how much you're willing to spend.
If you wanna start making some serious power - say 650+ HP, you're not going to get that with either engine using only bolt-ons. If you want that kind of power you're going to have to build a stoker motor with big heads and an even bigger cam. The approach and amount of work required to accomplish that kind of HP is IDENTICAL for both engines. I'd argue that the LT1 would be a better choice for those on a budget since the overall cost of heads/cams etc. seem to be cheaper for the LT1.
Both are great engines and yes the LS1 is faster - stock- but who cares about stock?
Here are some of the reasons I prefer the LT1 (even though I aslo think the LS1 is a great motor)
- Cast Iron block (a lot stronger than aluminum and cheaper too)
- Aluminum intake (you can always port the LT1 intake for more flow but you can't do squat with the LS1's plastic intake - you have to buy an aftermarket replacment like the LS6 intake)
- LT1's are cheaper to buy (for the time being)
- Cheaper to build up (for the time being)
- Sound. (The LT1 sounds sooo much better. - LS1 guy's, you know it's true
Either way, I love both engines and since the LT1 can do everything the LS1 does and do it for less money at the same time, I'll stick with the LT1.
Can't wait to receive all the hate mail from the LS1 die hards now :lsfight:

Yeah I am with Jpack I agree that the LS1 is better for fuel economy and all. But this is my toy. I don't give a crap about fuel economy. I want performnace, sound and looks, that is why I went with a 96 Z I it is more affordable. Plus I really like the 93-97 body, it looks a lot better the LS1 version. 98 + looks like a giant CATFISH from the front end. Plus the sound is not quit there. LT1 sounds better and looks more fierce in my opinion. Well that's my input :)

Man people just doggin the LS1's?? you guys are sayin "all you need to do is this and that, and the LT1 is better" but aren't we talkin stock V. stock here??
both can be modded to go faster than the other, but stock v. stock LS1 hands down....1st hand experience I'm STOCK I raced 2 LT1's that were STOCK and both weren't that close.
LT1 owners just DEMAND the LT1 looks better....I whole heartly disagree.but hey they gotta fall back on something.
Come on they're both good power plants....but the LS1 puts down better numbers STOCK,no denying that.

Catfish...lol...ok...I dont see any resembalince of a catfish when I look at my car....you think the little grille with the fog lights in it and the recessed foglight lookin headlights look better....and the stock LS1 hood atleast has some contour to it insted of just plain flat....and that pointy shark lip front clip is not my cup of tea....I wish people would stop bashin tho.

I really resent that statement ;) I dont think anyone will disagree that the LS1 puts down better numbers in the HP part stock but the LT1 has it on the TQ end :) As stated they are both great cars and I like them both. When I bought my car the LS1 wasnt even though of yet, or at least that we knew of :)

Okay now that really gets me confused, if the LS1 does have more torque than why do so many people say the LT1 can take it off the line but then gets over taken around 50-70mph. Is it because the LT! reaches its peak tq at a lower rpm?

Yup, all us LT1 owners and I suppose the owners of ALL OTHER AUTOMOBILE'S NOT LS1 POWERED should all sell our car's and buy the almighty LS1 otherwise we can't compete. LS1's own all, right? :duh:
I guess I should stop my solid roller 396 LT1 build-up right away. 500RWHP on motor and another 300 on the bottle simply can't compete ANY LS1- even one with only bolt ons 'cause as we all know, the LS1 makes 100,000,000,000,007 HP with just a cam and bolt-ons.
