anyone else have one? i gotta 292 (big block kinda) in my 78 LT. im really wantin to keep it in the car tho ive had offers to swap to a 350 or a 383 stroker for less than $2000.00 The engine works hard and has TONS of torque. was just wondering if anyone had any idea of how to build/beef one up at a decent cost.
I dont got one so i dont really know. a little bigger carburator and intake and a new rear-gear should help out

There used to be power parts available years ago for the inline sixs , clifford , Holley , heddman, all used to make intakes carbs and hedders for the 230-250-292 series sixs but you would probably be hard pressed to find anything anymore, cams are still available for them from Crane and a few others also.. but considering these engines have been out of production for many years (in the US anyway) it probably would be quite expensive to build one anymore .

ive checked out clifford, ive been thinking about a fuel injection setup. the swap-over is going to cost about $4-7Gs...:dizzy: and unfortunately, GM stopped production of the 292 block in 92. they had a manufaturing plant in mexico city that made them. i dont know, maybe ill just drop a 350 in there and be done with it. but I gotta tell you, I have rarely had any electrical problems. hell, I only need 8 wires for my car to run...2 for the battery and 6 for the plugs.
I just dont know if I wanna spend that kinda money on her at the moment, but I dont want to do the same thing everyone else does and swap to a 350,383,396,502(tho itd be nice). I like having the straight six

I know what you mean about having something different I knew a guy who bought a 78 base camaro new in 78 with a "6" and built it up to run high 12s he wanted a Z28 but just being 18 at the time couldent afford the ins so he built the 6, it had hedders (split into 2 pipes) a clifford intake and a 390 cfm holley, isky cam and popup (domed) pistons , it ran pretty strong for what it was but he wrecked it at the end of that summer and never got another.. although I believe it was close to all that could be done to a six at that time it still ran good on the street and made a really distinct exhaust noise .. you allways knew he was coming !! just so you know a small block or big block will drop right in you wont even have to change the frame mounts or wireing just move them around a little, the trans will even work and the rears are the same also it's actually an easy swap ...

I would just keep it stock...orginal stock camaro 6 cycl thats a hard find The thing with this car is it's not an original engine if it were it would have a 250 ci not a 292ci it's a truck engine someone installed at one time or another not the original one ....

if I remember right, it had a 250 and was swapped to a 292 shortly before I came accross it. loads of torque, bout 100 hp. :chuckles: , I used to run circle track in southern IL with it, and the engine has never given me problems, (besides no power and a small starter problem early this year)
The main problem I have is the 5 bolts that connect the bellhousing to the engine block. only one of them is the stock bolt. when I swapped to a manual, the friend of mine helping me lost 4 of the bolts. I sent him to the parts store to get new ones taking the old one with him. i didnt notice when he got back that he got the wrong bolts. just barely too big. we put them in with some effort before we noticed they werent the right size.
The way we noticed they were wrong was that the mounts for them had cracked/broken on the outside of the bolt on the block. :cussing:
anyone know how this can be remedied?:headbange

i dont think ill have to go too big for the carb, so ill prolly just get the one suggested for it. plus for the price, taint bad. but now I just have to decide if I should get 2... one for the car and one for the truck lol

If that 292 is integral head an intake won't do any good. You will have to change the head to a non-integral head.

im not sure, ill check when I get home. I already ordered the setup. and if it wont fit the camaro, ill just put it on the truck (250 L6 lol)
