Question $$$ in a 305?

Is it worth it to bore a 305 if it needs rebuilt or just go ahead and get a 350 and swap it out? I have heard the 305 is very unpowered compared to the 350. Also I could use the 305's 3.480 crank with 5.7 rods in the 350 right? I know the intake and carb can all be swapped.

Go 350.......you won't regret it. The power difference is phenominal, and the mileage is actually better with a 350 depending on the vehicle. Yes the 305 has parts you can use if they are both the same design, ie 1 piece or two piece rear mains etc.

go 350 for sure. The 305 doesn't even take modifications well because its a full blown bonafide smog engine.

Think about it ... you can drop the same amount into either engine doing the same thing (pistons, crank, rods), since all but the bore is the same. You can pick up a good used 350 for cheap. And most of all ... there is no replacement for displacement. You will never regret having a 350 (or stroked 383 ). You will always have second thoughts about a 305.

i`d go with the 383. this is my first 383 & i`ve built many 350`s and i have to say this little stroker is one bad mother.

So since the 305 crank is the same as a 350, could you put in a 3.75" stroke crank? What would that do?

It'd waste money stroking a 305 I'd guess. I got a 350 shortblock from a guy at work so I should be good. Anyone know what the stock stall speed for a 84 c-10 pickup is (w/ a 305 of course)?

Yeah it makes it a stroker and a mean ass lil one too lol, I had done it a few years back, parts were free and all I had to do was notch the block and buy some bearings. The draw back is the displacement and the heads. They do not flow worth ish!

Get a 350 block and get some hypereutectic pistons for @100 send it to the machine shop have it all balanced and throw it together and you have a very reliable fun motor for next to nuffin.

Yeah I'd like to have a nice 383 with a mean sounding cam, but still drivable. The transmission has just been rebuilt with a new TQ convertor, thats why I ask the stock stall speed or at least range if someone knows.....I searched google but came up with nothing.

Its a 84, and the cam I'm looking at operates between 1500-4500 RPM, so I should be good right?

I've got a crank laying around and the 305 TBI motor from my 3rd gen. I wonder what kind of power it could make with decent heads? It would probably put displacement somewhere in the 330's range.
