service engine soon light

94 3.4 v6- how do you get the codes?? the check engine light comes on every now and then. today it stayed on for about 15 minutes- got to work and shut off the car, restarted it and the light went out. the other day it came on while driving for about 1 minute and then it went back off.

On some 94 cars you can flash the codes to the SES light. Check this out.

If you plan on keeping your car it might be worthwhile buying a scanner for yourself. They are very handy and most of them you can analyze what your car is doing as well as get the codes and clear them. A friend of mine got one from Autozone for like 200.00 and it shows your knock retard and a lot of things the sensors are doing. Its a great tool for the do it yourselfer.

The contacts in the switch aren't contacting the key or the VATS controller is faulty. If you know the resistance of the key, you can bypass the switch with a resistor in the wiring. That would rule out the switch. This drawing shows the location of the connector you need to put the resistor in. It would go in the side away from the steering column.

You have to read the key reistance and then go to Radio Shack and find something that matches and slice it to the right part of the circuit. If you have absolutely no knowledge of the subject then I recommend you get help from someone that can do it for you.
