Coil Question

hey guys, well this is my first post, and well, im not mechanic so i have whats prolly a simple question, and i wanna make sure before i replace these coils/ICM

i have a '99 v-6 3.8 camaro

Ive been having massive missfires and im just wondering, ive replaced the cables and plugs, and when the car is cool, it runs great, when it gets warm/hot it starts misfiring, even worse now that ive changed those things. now, what i did notice is that i dont get any arch when i move the cable off the coil a lil bit on 2 of my cylinders, but on the rest they pop (arch like crazy, which im assuming is what they are supposed to do)

Any ideas,
I have an ICM and 3 coils, but before i put BOTH on, im wondering, you think its just the coils?

thanks!!
Steve

We had problems with our v-6 corsica, it would not run at all however. What needed replacing was either the ignition module which is the plate under the 3 coils we had or the crank trigger sensor...ended up doing both and it ran fine again. Your v-6 may be simular, I am not sure. Just thought I'd make you aware of these two possible culprits.

PS I'd try the coils first if you have them already....

the 2 cylinders that you took the cable off of that didnt arch, was it on the same coil? if so then it is for sure that coil. but the coils are not that expensive, the msds cost about 40 i think, and the house brand at your automotive is about 20 if i remember correctly. but the ICM is really expensive, and i doubt that is your problem. change out that coil, all of them if you want to. the autozone here was able to check mine when i brought them in.

You can get all 3 coils (MSD) for $99 off jegs or summit (I can't remember). My wifes car did this same thing and I will tell you now, don't buy the cheap ones, they will go out. You are looking at something like $150 for the ICM, That is the next thing I am putting on my wifes car. I would say get the MSD's, it's worth it.

welp, i replaced the coils today, all 3 and had horrible misfire/backfire, Engine would totaly spit and die when id give it gas in drive, so i replaced the old coils that were on and it runs, but still misfiring, i have the coil pack (icm) for it, it is OEM, but thats my next step, i noticed a very weak arch.

To clarify the "no arch" there was no arch on #6 and #2 which are on 2 different coils...

Hopefully this works.. blah!

The light was on until the computer was sure there was not a problem. The code will be stored for a while in the computer.
