Cooling Fans

I have a 91 z28 Camaro 305. I was wondering if one of the fans should is supposed to come on when i turn my key to the on possition. My battery keeps dieing and im trying to figure whats draining it, so any information on the way the fans should work when they are wired up properly would be great, thanks.

Somebody has tampered with the wiring I bet. It sounds like somebody wired it to a 12v koeo-koer source. So it will be hot when the ignition is hit.

Autozone sells a relay kit for around 20 bucks Relay and temp sensor. You have your sensor goes in the the radiator. relay ground-hot-fan-switch < wires 2 ways. To a koer source and a wire to the ac to turn on when the ac is on >

Mine turns on at 170 off at 190 and I have a 160 thermo .

The fan should come on only when the A/C switch is in the On position if the switch is Off the fan should not be on when the key is on unless the engine is over 230* you could have a bad sensor for the fan switch or a stuck relay
The relay is by the firewall I believe (any good auto parts store should be able to tell you where it is), they sometimes stick so that is where I would start..

Both the fan relays are on the firewall to the right of the brake booster(from the front of the car. There are 3 total 2 for the fans 1 for the fuel pump. There are a few ways that it could have been wired to have a fan run with the key on. I have seen it where the high pressure switch for the AC is jumped which would cause it to run anytime the key was on. A factory relay could have had its 12v switch source jumped to anything that is hot when the ignition is turned on. Also, a whole new relay could have been wired in bypassing the factory relay altogether.

This probably will not solve your battery drain problem. That will most likely require some time with a voltmeter.
