We need to know what dist the car has, what is hooked up now, does it have the Q-Jet with the sensors? If this is an '84 it should have a vacuum advance. You need to check and make sure that the timing chain is on right and that the dist is not turned 180* and set to #6 TDC. What all sensors are on the engine and what are the wires that are loose? All of that crap on the engine during that time, it's best to just put a new carb and intake on it with a newer dist just to make things a little easier. If you can get some pics of the setup that would help a lot.

I will have to look at your pics to see exactly what u need to do. Most chevy carbureted engines are simple to hook up. One wire to the alternator, starter wires, ground strap, temperature sensor, oil pressure, battery. As far as the distributor, I have only used an HEI which requires one wire for power and one wire for the tach, and a vaccum advance with the vaccum line going to the carb. How do you know the engine is timed right? It could be 180 off.
If the engine is timed right, and it is getting fuel and spark, it should fire right up. Post your pics. U must have something hooked up wrong if the timing is right. |

Yea i think im going to have to agree with everyone on here that its probably timing. Regardless of the type of distributor if it backfires then its fireing. It sounds like your running too far advanced especially because you say that the motor turns and then stops (because the motor fired too soon and is now going against the starter so be carefull i blew a starter motor to pieces that way). Retard the timeing a few degrees and i bet it would start. Thats assumeing the distributor was installed right in the first place and all the plug wires are going to the right cylinders. To check if the distributor was installed right take out the cyl #1 spark plug with your finger and turn the motor over till you feel compression once you do continue to turn the motor over till the timing tab says your at 0 TDC. Then pull the distributor cap off and check to make sure the rotor is pointed at the post on the distributor where the cyl #1's spark plug wire would attach. If thats true your distributor is installed right and ide bet it just needs to be retarded a few degrees. I know you said the timing was right but the symptoms you describe are so typical of a car with the timing too far advanced ide recomend retarding the timeing a few degrees just for a test. Also double check to make sure your plug wires are all going to the right cylinders.

Just incase you didn't know, the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 on chevy engines up to and including the LTx motors.
