Somethine electrical wrong? Help please

The Z is a 94 M6 and I started having the problem a few days maybe weeks after we installed a new throttle body, vortex elbow, slp cai, 160 degree therm, and the manual fan switch. Well the problem is that when running at different times could be 5 min could be 30 sec after the car has started that the fans will both kick on hi and my SES light will turn on basically the same time everytime. Ive searched the forum have found people with a similar problem but i am having no luck.. I have tryed to check for codes but nobody can get my SES to flash. Any thoughts?

Certain SES codes will cause the fans to run at high speed. I gotta go read up and see which ones they are.

If the SES light flashes while driving, it is telling you that the engine is misfiring.

the SES doesnt flash, once its turns on w/the fans it just stays on. When it all kicks on i feel like the motor boggs just a little and when at night u can see the lights dim.

Did you get the codes pulled with a code reader? It should have retained it into the memory.

it doesnt flash. and you cant read it like the old paper clip way. you have to use a scanner. and if you`ve done all those mods with out getting the pcm done then that might be way the mil light is coming on and the fans.

The lights will dim cause of the fan, but you need to have your alt checked as well. It should have more than enough power to run both fans on high. And you say that it feels like a loss of power, well you are right. When your ses comes on and your fans come on, the motor is going into a socalled "survive" mode. It will pull a crap load of timing and dump a crapload of fuel just incase it's lean. So, you are getting a lack of power.

Now, as for your problem, You just need to hook a code reader up to your car and get the codes. That will tell us exactly where to look. The SES light will cause the fans to come on, and may not have anything to do with what your problem is. When you say that it's almost always less than 5 minutes, that tells me that it's giving the code when the computer is going into closed loop from open loop. Everytime your car is started, the computer runs a self test, and if it finds anything wrong, then it wil set a code. So, get your codes read and let us know what it is.

Most local auto parts stores will read the codes for free.

Yup, AZ will want to "flash" your codes and the last year that you can do that is 93. Yours requires a reader, and most people will say that there is no reader. I know for a fact that there is, cause I used to have one lol. If you have a laptop, then we can point you in the direction to get a cable and you can do a lot more than just "read" the codes. You can datalog the car while you are driving and it will tell you exactly what all the sensors are doing. You can go to the dealer, but they may charge you for pulling them. Some around here have a 1 hour min that they charge, and a lot of them are charging $65+ per hour.

also should have added that fuel milage has gone out the door too...on the highway was around 30mpg and in the city it was above 20 now.. it has dropped to around 23 highway.. and from what Tony has said about it pulling timing dumping fuel and running lean... alot of fuel odor with all this..

Not dumping fuel and running lean, but dumping fuel just incase it's running lean. All the computer knows is that there is a problem, so it's going to do what it can to save the motor. But yes, it will cause your MPG to go down. But, holy crap, 30mpg with a 94 LT1, that is good...

You can get a scanner from any autoparts store. But, they are going to run you about $40-$300 depending on how good of one you get. So, if you want to get someting like that, I would suggest the cable for a laptop if you have one. Or, you can hook it up with a desktop out in the garage if you have an extra one.
