96 Window removal

Well i have a problem with the window on my 96z28. On the drivers side the window will no longer stay on its track. I have figured out that the problem is the guidebar thats just behind the middle of the door has a little metal pin that attaches to a metal bracket on the lower window. This metal pin has become unattached from the bracket causing the window to go wherever it wants when the window is raised or lower. So what i need to know is how to get the window out of the door, i already have the door panel off i just need to know what to remove to get the window out.

Thanks in advance,
Brandon.

The window has a rail that the glass sits in that is riveted to the rest of the assembly. They have to be drilled out then the glass will come come right out the top

Yea thats the part that broke, the riveted part between the window and the rail. Ok, well thanks for the answer then.

Unfortunately mine broke by itself, probably from repeated use of using the window to close the door by the previous owner(s) rather than pushing on the door. Yea from looking in there though it doesnt look easy to drill out the rivet because it is on the backside of the window (side towards the outside of the door, so you would have to go in thru one of the access holes and then around the window and drill there i would guess.

You only need to replace the track, you can re-use your window glass. Drilling out the 3 rivets that hold the glass to the track is the hard part.

It is not possible to remove the window from the door with the track attached. The only way to get it out attached is to cut the door.

Start by cutting off the rivet stems with a cutoff wheel. Then, use a punch to mark the center of the rivet stem. Use a small drill bit to drill a pilot hole into the rivet. Finish with a large bit to drill out the rivet.

This will allow you to remove the door glass. Once it is removed, inspect the plastic fastener parts and replace them as necessary. They may be damaged from the drilling.

Now you will be able to manipulate the window regulator (with the motor removed) by hand and slide the old rail out, and the new rail in. Reattach the window with stainless steel locknuts and bolts, forget about the rivets.
