hi guys, I have a very simple question! I recently had a mechanic install an msd opti spark cap and rotor last week because my original had failed due to a water pump leak!! is there a specific order in which you need to install the wires to the optispark? I know the optispark has a firing order sequence but the wires i bought (durlast) don't have a number on them? how can i tell which one belongs where? Aren't all 8 wires the same?? Mechanic told me as long as the spark plug wires reach each spark plug, it's fine! is that true???
Please help, thanks! New z28 member! ![]() |

also sometimes when an opti goes bad, just more then the cap and rotor needs to be replaced ... water can short out the optical sensors in the opti, causing the same failures as before even with a new cap and rotor.

what do you mean the firing order correct? isn't the opti already set up with a firing sequence? do i have to adjust something on the opti? I'm so close to having my black 94 z28 running again but when i turn the key to turn it on, it cranks and cranks and i get a pop sound and white smoke coming out of the intake throttle body!! what causes that?? Timing not correct? if so how do you correct the timing? what tools do i need? please help! i can wait to start smoking those little Gt's again!

Check the link in othe previous couple of posts and check your firing order. Thee are no adjustments to the opti for timing. It is also possible it is not keyed correctly. Was it completely removed for the cap replacement?

i have an msd cap and rotor installed on my 94 z28. It came with a manual showing me the firing order. why do i need to know the firing order if all the cables are the same and i can just connect them where ever as long as they reach??? i don't get it.

ok your not really understanding....look at this....http://shbox.com/1/opti.jpg....courtesy of shoebox....see how the opti has a certain order....you can not hook up a wire to the left of the opti thats says cyl 4 then run it to the motor and huck it up to cyl 2....which wire you use doesnt matter WHERE you put it is what matterS....last thing ...you mentioned that your opti had gotten wet....thats why you replace the cap and roter but you shouldnt replace the whole thing....probably might of even been cheaper....good luck though.
