I figured autozone had one but is it a good one. Are they all the same or are some better?

It is a decent one but something that would be even better and if you already have a laptop cheaper is pickup an OBD1 cable that hooks to your computer and you will get more use out of it than just a scanner.

So i'm looking at 100ish for a cable, i need to get software too or what? i'm completely ignorant on this so feed it to me like i'm 4 years old

Just the cable and then yes you will need software but fortunatly the software that you are looking at needing is all over the internet and is free.

I use freescan the majority of the time

Yes freescan and pcmcomm are both free to use. They will allow you to do a lot more, and see a lot more then a simple scanner can. There is other software out there that can actually log data as well, Datamaster ... this is great for fine tuning your car. You can then tune the pcm yourself with CATS tuner or LT1edit.

You cannot tune a 93 car like 94+ Cars with a laptop and software ... they require chips to be burned ... however you can buy a chip burner and the software to do it. You can datalog the 93's like the 94+ cars, and then request a custom tune from pcmforless or madz28. here is the 93 ecm list....
