The factory shifters from the early 70s came two ways a straight gated shifter and the Z/28s had a shifter that you could pull it into low and push outward against a stop for second and third gears It was called a "sport" shifter in the Dealer flyers .. these were the only factory shifters ever put in if you have an actual ratchet type shifter someone put it in
which is not unusual for that old of a car..

Actually, thats Not how a ratchet type shifter works ...
A true ratchet shifter B&M, Hurst, ETC has a spring loaded ratchet built into it allowing a short stroke single motion shift that returns the shifter to the same place after each shift...
