Changing Gear Ratio...

If I change to 3.42 gears do I have to get a new carrier or just the gears?
Also, I noticed the gears are sold for carriers of 3.08 or less, or for carriers of 3.23 or less. What one would my stock carrier be?
Thanks for the help!

What year is your car? You will need to find out what gear you have in it.A quick way would be to put a mark on your drive shaft and turn your back tire around one full time by marking that as well.Say if the drive shaft turns 3 full turns by one full spin of the wheel you have a 3.08,or if it turns 3 1/2 it is a 3.42.If you can't figure it out than there should be a tag on the rear cover with no. on it to find out what gears are in it.

Check the build sticker on the door for the RPO about what axle you have- the base axle for the V-8 was a 2.73 to help boost GM's CAFE numbers. The performance axle for the auto (A4) was 3.23, and the manual, M6 came with a 3.42- I don't remember off the top of my head, the axle code should be like GU3 or GU4, something like that- also, G80 is the code for the positraction-

If you have the 2 series carrier, it won't work with a 3 series ring gear- though they do make a thicker carrier to put the 3 series gear in there- If you are going to get into it that far, I would recommend a re-build kit with all the bearings, for about another $100- might as well do it right-

My car is a 2000 Z28, with auto trans. The door strip says GU2 and G80.

GU2 = 2.73 axle- "2" series carrier-

have a look at:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Richmond+Gear/...007-1/10002/-1

Richmond aren't the quietest gears out there, just showing you what kind of thing is available to put 3.XX gears on a2-series carrier
