Loud noise and a sloppy shift.

It kinda hard to explain but when my car shifts from 2nd to 3rd it feels like the drive shaft or the rear end comes lose and then grabs about a second laster. It makes a hollow sound when it does it. I dont know if this matters but when going down a hill it has a tendency not to so this. I was thinking maybe the universal joint but from what I understand is that if the universal was bad then it would be loose. O and the car is a auto 700R4. Sorry if that is not a great explanation. Any ideas will help.

Well ide say your probably looking at some transmission troubles (like you havnt thought of that already lol). I mean a bad universal can do some strange things but it will do it all the time not just on the 2-3 shift. Rear ends can howl and whine but again not just on the 2-3 shift. Im not terrably familiar with automatic transmissions internals im sure theres someone on here that could help with more detail but even without knowing what in the trans is damaged chances are it wont be a case of open it up and change what broken. More likely it will be a rebuild or replacement just like when a motors burning oil. You could get new rings but the rest of the motor probably needs attention as well the rings just happened to be the thing that failed first.
