price of gear install?

Hi. I plan to have a set of 3.73 gears, I recently picked up installed by a shop on my 93 Z28. The shop Quoted me 800 dollars for just the install job not including the cost of install kit or gears which I would be providing. I wondered if this was a fair price for just installation of gears alone? any help would be greatly appreciated.

That price is about twice what they should be charging. There is a crapload of labor involved in putting gears in, and most of the time, you have to install them about 4 times to get it right. But, I don't see it costing more than $400 just for labor + parts.

thanks for the advice. I also did some searching around and found that it really does look like what I was quoted was a bit much. The messed up thing is that I have had this shop do a lot of work to my car and at this point it is like ten grand worth of work.

I will almost bet money that they are wanting to take the rearend out and put it on a bench to do it. It's a lot easier to do that way, but also, they get to charge you for R&R'ing the rear end as well as the install of the gears. There is a lot of little tricks that shops can do to make some extra money.

I took my rearend to a shop and already dissambled. Cost me $330 for the labor and that included welding the tubes. I was quoted $650 and passed on it. If you got cash and not in a hurry, you can find your best deal.

In NYC I was quoted about $450 for labor. That still made me want to try doing it myself. If I had a friend that knew how to do it, I would even pay them some. Summit has an instruction video for $20. If you can do the work yourself a gear swap seems like the cheapest speed out there! I would love to be able to swap them myself for the future. How hard are they really? I would even invest in the tools like a micrometer and torque ratchet. If someone could post the steps or link me to a thread with them I can make an educated decision. The hardest part I can think of is shimming it correctly. I know messing up that step WILL kill gears.

As far as hard, it's not really hard. You will get tired of lifting the chunk out of the rearend after about the second time. Replacing the crush sleeve every try is a pita as well. And, getting them set within spec, with the correct pinion depth and wear pattern is a major pita.
