gear whine

I am still babying the z with the occasional romp through the gears.
I have this aweful sound coming from the tunnel. It is present from 20 mph to 0 mph stop and cruising at any speed with a touch of throttle in the 2000 to 2500 rpm range.

When the throttle is hammered, there is no whine at all just a little vibration. Is this your typical gear whine? If so, I can accept that and just turn up the stereo.

Thanks guys.

When you say tunnel do you mean in the rearend section or are you stating under your console area?

Could the TC be causing this noise?
It is audiblle under the console area. When I slow to a stop, it's like i can hear the driveshaft spinning inside the tail of the trans.

Remember, it's a '94 trans with a '96 tail shaft housing to accomodate the wire harness.

Engine: 450hp 355ci
Trans: built 4l60e with all corvette parts and 3200 stall (Boss Hog)
DS: balanced aluminum ds with bearing new u-joints
Rear: 373 gears with new bearings, seals and HD crosspin.

I would say that is not normal. Normally gear whine comes from your rearend and you will hear it from the tail of the car.

what gear are you in when you hear it? If the sound stays the same when the trans shifts, then it's the rearend and aftermarket gears are known for that. but if it only does it in one gear, then you prolly have something in there that is trying to go out.

You might want to check your diff fluid, considering you just replaced the seals.

Noisy no matter what gear but only in the 2000-2500 rpm range or slowing to a stop.

I will change the trans fluid and diff fluid.

The trans works great, no problems.

If you are getting the noise at a certain RPM and not at a certain speed, I wouldn't be so sure it's your rear. I can't hear it from here () but wonder if it isn't something in the tranny?

Boss hog 2800-3200 TC

It is actually making noise all the the time. I can hear it at idle in drive 2-3 mph. It is linked to the driveshaft. The noise is harmonized with the revs of the driveshaft.

Its turning into a mystery.

Or does it do it while power braking (before the wheels break loose ).
