Auto Trans shifting funny
I have a 94 Z28 with auto tranny. I bought the car a month ago and it has run like a scalled bat the whole time. Saturday night I sownshifted because a red light and the damn thing would not sift down or rev up the RPMs. I took off from the light in first and when I shifted into second(4000 rpms) the rpms redlined and the car did not shift immediatly. After a second or two the thing cought gear, barked, an ran like it normally does.
When you drive it normal, it shifts fine except that right before it goes into second gear, the RPMs rev a little and then it shifts. I can't downshift to use it as a extra brake anymore because it will not catch. I probably tore something up just do not know what. Any help would be appreciated. Do you think the shift kit is broke or is it the tranny? |

It is not good for your tranny to down shift it. You have 4 wheel disc brakes use them up. It is much cheaper than replacing a tranny. My guess is you have to deal with it or shell out $1500 for a new one. You really should only use your brakes for stopping. Even the road racers that have to down shift give it rpm's before down shifting to minimize the drastic change. Good luck.

My car does the same thing just going into 3rd. my problem is a mixture of things. When i rebuilt my tranny i had a problem with the 3rd gear clutch pack and piston. It was just alitte too tight and didnt go in quite like the rest ive done. I also put a shift kit in and i think that might have to do with it too. Ive driven it 12k miles since i rebuilt it and its done that since day one and its still going. So just quit that down shifting and drive it. It shouldnt let you down any time soon. Just be carefull on full ecceleration that it does go into 2nd and doesnt blow the engine up. There was one time when mine didnt go into 3rd and acted like nueltral so just be carefull with it. Ide deff look into gettting that tranny rebuilt or getting a new one.

Took it to a Tranny shop today and the thing ran like new. No problems, I did quit downshifting for the last to days. The guy at the shop said the belt is probably glazed over due to the heating of the transmission. He ran the hell out of it and it shifted fine. Thanks for the input.
