Rear End Gear Ratios

I am trying to help my father-in-law out. He has a '67 firebird that he bought when he was in highschool. It has been sitting for about 8 years now becuase it wouldn't pass emitions, and he finally got the money to fix it and get it running again. It originally had the Power Glide in it, but he swapped it for a TH400 when he was in High school. Last night we Jacked up one tire and spun it to see if we could figure out which rear end he has. We couldn't tell if they are 2.73 or 3.08. Does anybody know which of those rear ends were more likely to come in a 67 firebird with the Powerglide.

2.73's were pretty common for the 67 FB and Camaro in 67-68.

If Your Not Completly Sure. Pull The Cover Off The Rear Housing And Count The Teeth. I Believe You Would Divide The Pinion Gear Into The Ring Gear. Plus, If Its Been Sitting For 8 Years, You Will Want To Change Out The Diff. Lube Anyways.

I can't speak to Firebirds, but 3.08's were the most common gear for Camaros, except when they came with powerglide transmissions, like your father in law's car. In that case, 2.73's were standard. Mike Mitchell is right that you'll want to change the gear oil, but it can be hard to get a count on the pinion with the diff in place. All you need is a piece of chalk to figure the rear ratio out. Mark the bottom of the driveshaft and the bottom edge of the passenger side tire. Spin the tire until the mark on the driveshaft comes back to the starting point. The number of turns of the wheel is the gear ratio. The difference between 2.73s and 3.08s should be pretty obvious using this method.

My '67 rs car still has the factory 327, powergilde and 3.08 gears. It is all listed on the protecto plate with the car to back it up as original equipment.

Is your car a Norwood car or Van Nuys?

These are the codes for camaro these would be followed by other numbers and letters (date code). They would be stamped on the axle tube driver side towards the rear. Dont know if they would be same for FBird
