gear choice?

I have a 97 z with a 6 speed. Im kinda thinking on putting some gear too it. Now, why does evryone always say go with 3.73? With the 6 speed and 4.11 I would think you would still get very good drivability and much quicker. I never use 6 gear now, so why not put some gear in it so I actully use it?

From what I hear, you won't notice much going from 3.42 to 3.73. With a 4.10 you will have a quick first gear and you will definitely use 6th on the highway. I use 6th with my 3.42's. At 80 I'm barely cracking the throttle.

It all depends on what you have in mind for the future of your car. 3.73 is an easier gear to put a power adder to in the future and not worry about running out of gear at the 1/4 mile. For example I have the 4.10 in my car but since I am spraying it I was running out of gear (4th) at the top of the track so I had to go to a 28" tire to bring my gearing down a little bit. It really is a preference choice as you have heard and like Lyle said you probably wont feel much of a difference going from the 3.42 to the 3.73's.

4:10's till your mods force you into 5th like Fanta said. You won't regret it.

in your best guess, how much quicker in the 1/4 mile would 4.10 make it?

I'm pretty sure that all M6 cars after 93 came with 3.42 gears.
