$500 to throw in gears? Ouch! Is it that hard?

There's a shop in Monroe (close to you, Shaun ) that quoted $350 to install gears in a c4 vette. I don't see how it could be anymore for an f-bod..... though that was a few years ago......

I only paid $250 and the average around here is $300 or so. Do some research on what gears to get since they're not all made the same. Motive is the most popular brand.

Agreed. It doesn't increase HP any, and it may even lower your dyno numbers, but it's by far one of the best mods for increase acceleration and overall performance before cam/heads. It's also much cheaper than those.

Heh. The average quote I got here from a few shops in San Diego was $700. But wait-that doesn't include having to reprogram the PCM for the different gear ratio. So, with a Hypertech or whatever to do the reprograming I'm looking at a grand or so.
Make sure that you have the resources to reprogram your PCM if you do the gear change. Also, if you plan on buying the gears yourself, keep in mind that the shop may only warranty the labor part of the final cost and not the parts. The shops in my neck of the woods said that if I provided the gears then NOTHING would be warrantied, so beware...

if i were you id save my money dont bother, i have 4:10's and it only weakens your ten bolt...3:42 is a good solid ratio...work on your a4 and forge it, or get a centerforce clutch or better yet jus get a TA girdle and all that...4:10 has such a small pinion that when u build the motor your gonna change your gears like your underwear...if you plan on having a high HP motor save your money and buy a 9" or a moser 12 bolt...but if you looking for a streetable 400hp machine...keep your 3:42's

Well, I'd say if it's gonna cost you over $800 or so to do a gear swap, then definitely wait and save for a bigger rear end. The steeper gears are a good bit weaker than the stockers, and the TA Girdle does little to nothing to help. Good luck and let us know what you do.

You do have an M6 right. Otherwise if you have an A4 I wouldn't go higher than 3.73s. Also other than the gears you might also want to get an install kit.
