If you mean the pistons 6 and 8 are both at top dead center....Thats because one is on the top of the compression stroke the other is at the top the the exhaust stroke.

Looking at your pictures I don't see them at the same height, 6 is lower than 8. However they could just be passing each other and are not at BDC.

6 and 8 would never be at TDC on a good small block. 1 and 6 would be however since they are 180* out on the timing.

doing the same job.........had a gasket leak so i pulled it all they looked funky at first. Just turn the motor clockwise at crank pulley with a 5/8 socket till you hit top dea center. then youll know this by pulling number 1 spark plug also using 5/8 socket and put a piece of napkin in the spark plug and when you motor hits top dead or close to it the tissue will pop out form the compression.

...new? ...if so looks like you have had Head-gasket leaking on outside edge? ...also check gap on the spark plug in 2nd cyl from front in PIC ...looks like it's too hot? (be careful with that napkin-test suggestion that you know what stroke #1 cylinder is on or instead of popping it out, you may pull it into your engine).
