Smile Machine Shop..

I found a Awesome machine shop in town..its about 3 miles away from my house they have been around and building motors for like 28 years or something like that. Really nice guys they took me around and showed me the tools and all that good stuff..

Only 78 bucks to get the block hat tank and dipped..

But any ways i was talking to him about building my 350 for me and he said for $3000-$3500 he could clean,Line hone, Bore, Balance and all that good stuff and build a 350-400hp motor for me brake it in on a dyno and throw in a set of cast iron vortec heads.....

I might have to save up...

Would it be better for me to just get it cleaned and all that and do it myself?..

Well heres my oppinion of the matter. Theres nothing like a competant machinest and theres alot of things that you cant do and how costly alot of it is. For example i just has my light weight steel crank balanced and it cost me $460. If it was just a simple rebuild punched out cylinders ect then yea there usually pretty reasonable. Now that being said would i have them do the work in this situation? No. Im not knocking on there ability i say this only because you can buy NEW crate motors from companies like summit racing that put out that amount of power or more with better quality parts (forged internals aluminum heads 4 bolt mains roller cam the works) for roughly that same price with a longer warranty most likely and theres no waiting time you order the motor and its there next week not down a the shop for god only knows how long depending how busy they are. Plus youll have a spare motor to sell to further offset the cost in a new motors favor.

Yea thats what ide do if thats all it needs. Ide deffinetly give it a good check though cuz nothing sucks more then to get a motor all back together and 10k miles later find out that the valve guids are shot or the rings wont seal because the cylinders are out of round or the rods knock because the crank was worn out. I mean idk what the story on your motor is but just alittle advise from some hard lessons learned.

Yeah i went throw summit and picked out everything i wanted for this motor and needed...

Eagle Rotating Assembly...

ARP main Studs..

Cam Kit with lifters..

Push Rods..

Timing Chain Set..

HV Oil Pump..

Roller Rockers...

and it only cam to $1004.60

And that is all Strong Name Brand Parts. i Dont Have to Even Go That Far Into it and knock off 300 bucks if i wanted to but if i am going to build it i am going to do it the way i want the 1st time....

Also my friend Has a set off Alum Heads Fresh Valves and seals And roller rockers all that with a 5 angle valve job and he said he would throw in a Performance Intake for 1200.00 so i am saving for them the car he has them on now Runs a 10.6...

Yea i absolutly agree with you on that one. Do it right the first time i cant tell you how much buying the cheap stuff has cost me once i have to do it twice especially never scrimp on the the most critical part of the car because again youll pay for it later and its alot more expencive. When i did my 350 swap i scrimped and bought a rebuilt block from pep boys biggest mistake i ever made. No assembly grease used solid lifters adjusted with no lash after 3 years the oil pressure dropped so i pulled the motor and i discovered the oil pump was within a few days of just falling off i found a rod nut that was on finger tight and the wrong cam bearings were used. Needless to say by the time i straighten that motor out i could have just bought a new one. Cheap summit brand gaskets again worked great for a while but then developed a head gasket leak. Cheap Ebay bearings couldnt even use them as they were packaged together and shrink wrapped one on top of the other and this left some deep gouges in the bearings from crushing them all together like that. Ebay distributor the mecanical advance stud that held the counter weights on fell apart. Nothing but trouble when it comes to cheap parts.
