427

whats the deal with the 427 truck as opposed to the 427 car motor. I know one is a tall deck and one is a short deck why is that and would it be posible to get good power out of the truck block.

You can.. the drawback to using a truck block is the fact that it requires a bunch of expensive parts to make it work and being a tall deck block it uses 4 ring pistons which are useless for performance so special pistons are needed and the deck makes it necessary to use a set of spacers to use a intake on the tall deck, also some of the truck blocks are known for cracking and usually they will only bore .030-.040 plus they have usually been used to the point of being warn out.. it can be done but when you can buy a standard height deck and go cheeper why would you want to build a tall deck..

That's some really good info BBCAM I didn't know the details about the extra piston rings!!! Another small factor is, you would either need to make sure you run the stock distributor or get one with an adjustable slip collar.

Tall Deck Big Block

I built an engine using the tall deck Gen V block. I had added expense because I chose to keep the one piece rear main sealed forged crankshaft. The expense was the cost of balancing (Heavy Metal required). I was lucky to find a standard bore 427 tall deck. I used L-88 pistons with Total Seals on +.400" longer H-beam rods. I used GM Signature Series Aluminum Rectangle Port Heads and an L-88 GM Intake manifold but had to use spacers to run it. I used a Comp Cam Magnum Muscle Car Cam, it is an updated profile based on the solid lifter GM Cam of the 425hp Vettes. It has 2" Hookers that took some fitting to plant the tall deck between the fenders of a 1967 Camaro RS Convertible. The tall deck truck block has a bunch more material around the cylinders walls. The power and torque is breath taking. I would advise anyone coming across a cherry tall deck to rat hole it. It makes an excellent platform on which to base a combination.
