I have the 160 thermo.

It works in my car as in keeping the temp down. I stay around the 170-180 mark with it.

I have a ECU re-program from PCMFORLESS This is necessary to change when the fan kicks in and out and yes is actually necessary although it's not like your car won't run if you don't you just don't get the full benefit of having a 160 thermostat.

Does it make a difference horsepower wise? I'm not sure. The theory is the fuel/air is cooler and so more power is produced. I didn't get a "seat of the pants improvement" and I've not dynoed it either. Others here might can answer that question

I think the 160 stat has worked for me, the car does run cooler when I'm moving over 30mph, so that's a good thing. The computer still makes the fan kick on when the temp hits 220 degrees? So I'm going to buy the updated chip for my 93, the fan will run much sooner. I actually did notice more pickup, also my gas mileage dropped, in my opinion that's a small price to pay.

If you have 94 up, you just have to get your computer reprogrammed or set up a manual fan switch. I do know for my 93Z28 getting the new "chip" adds more hp, and better response, so for me, <$200.00 is worth it. With the updated chip, K&N, JBA's high-flow cat & exhaust, I'm ESTIMATING that all that will add about 30-40rwhp. Next step after that is getting a catback, I think I'll be sitting pretty good till I get my engine replaced.
