Valve Lash Adjustment Problems

I ADJUSTED THE VALVE LASH TODAY ON MY 97. BROUGHT EACH VALVE TO TDC (PUSHROD DOWN) TIGHTEND THE ROCKER TILL THE PUSHROD HAD RESISTENCE AND ADDED THE PRELOAD OF 3/4 OF A TURN. WITH THE 3/4 TURN SOME OF THE ROCKERS WERE LOSE SO I WENT A LITTLE PAST 3/4 UNTIL THE ROCKER WAS SEATED , NOW MY CAR IS RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND MISS FIRES AT IDLE. DOES ANYONE HAVE A BETTER WAY OF DOING THIS OR AM I JUST DOING IT WRONG. I USED THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT I GOT FROM Z28.COM SHOULD I HAVE JUST WENT TO 3/4 OF A TURN EVEN WITH THE ROCKER BEING LOSE.

PLEASE HELP

I would suggest this site: http://csce.uark.edu/~jgbertr/rb/4th_gen_tech2.html#adjust_valves
I found it very useful. Also the hydraulic lifters shouldn't require adjustment to obtain zero lash. Good luck

The first thing you would have to do is just set cylinder number 1 to top dead center on the compression stroke. You can adjust half the valves with it on number one then you have to get number 6 to TDC to do the other half. Here are the adjustments..... #1 TDC- Exhaust valves - #s 1,3,4,8
Intake valves - #s 1,2,5,7
Then you have to turn the engine one full revolution to number 6 TDC.
#6 TDC- Exhaust valves - # 2,5,6,7
Intake valves - # 3,4,6,8

get them to zero lash and 3/4 to one ful turn is spec. i would do 3/4 of a turn but make sure they are all about the same.

How long has it run since you adjusted the valves? WHen you adjust the vavles with the engine off you will open the valves slightly. The engine needs to run a bit to bleed the lifters back down. the best way to do this is with the engine running. I've done it a hundred times but never in a camaro with limited access.

With the engine running you would back off the valve lash 203 turns. You will hear the rocker tapping. slowly tighten it down till the tapping stops then go 3/4 turn more. This is by far the easiest way but you gotta work fast cause the oil could get on the exhaust and start a fire. I have a valve cover with the top cut out just for this job.
