Unhappy Fuel pump!

Hey guys, my fuel pump went out about three weeks ago and to get it fixed my local shop quoted me $405 to fix the problem and i don't have that money to get it fixed right now. But I really would like to get my Camaro back on the road (If you know what I mean). So If anyone could take the time to explain to me what I would need to fix it and how to I would really appreciate it!! I am not complete oblivious to how to perform auto repair so I'm not out in space on auto repair. But if someone could explain repairing my fuel pump, strainer, and everything else
I would really appreciate it.

P.S. I have a Chilton Manual, but i need the instruction put into perspective.

THANKS! Maybe you saw my other post on my fuel pump.

The gas tank in the 3rd gens are a major pain!
Changing the pump is not a job for the novice mechanic on these cars!!!!!
The gas tank is mounted upright over the rear axle. In order to remove it you must jack and support the rear of the car but not by the axle. remove the bolts holding the panhard rod to the trans so it will move freely. Let the rear axle drop as far as it will.
Disconnect the rear shocks from the axle and check the rear brake hose. If your lucky the bracket that holds the brake hose to the frame will be a bolt on type, if not you may need to disconnect it. Once you have the rear end down as far as it will go you need to see if the exhaust on your car will interfere with the tank coming out. If it is going to be in the way you have to remove the pipe section from the cat to the muffler. Open the fuel door and unscrew the bolts that hold the filler neck to the inside of the fuel door. Use a jack and support the bottom of the gas tank and remove the tank strap bolts and swing straps out of way, a coat hanger will hold them together and out of the way. Slowly lower the tank a few inches and you can gain access to the fuel lines and wiring harness to the tank. Disconnect all of them and watch for a ground strap from the filler neck to the body (not all models). Once all hoses and straps and wiring harnesses are unhooked lower the tank a little at a time untill you can get to the filler neck hose. Disconect the hose and continue lowering. Once you have it all the way down you can drag it out. A large peice of cardboard will help you slide it out without dragging the tank on the ground. Once you have the tank out on the ground there is a lock ring where all the wires and hoses go in and it is probably buried under a puddy type sealant and years of road dirt and grime. Peel this away and there will be 3 tangs facing up. Use a screwdriver and hammer and these 3 tangs to turn the lock ring counter clockwise. Once it goes about 1/4 turn it will pop and you can lift it off. Remove the whole assebely slowly and carefully. The sending unit and float arm are also attached to the pump bracket so watch the float. The pump is pretty much self explanitory from there.

The biggest thing to watch is how heavy the tank is. Gas weights 6.34 lb per gallon! so if you have 10 gallons of gas then the tank will weight more than 63 lb!!
I would have an extra set of hands for this job if I were you.
