Fuel Pump '83 Z28

Does anyone know if the fuel pump on an '83 Z28 is in the top of the fuel tank? I know that it is in the tank but someone told me that it might be on the front side (side facing the front of the car). I was hoping that it was on top. If it is on top does anyone know if you can cut an access hole from the inside of the car where the t-tops sit for storage, when your not using them, to get to the pump rather that removing the tank, axle etc.? I understand that it is a nightmare.......Thanks...

The book shows the lines to curve perhaps to the front of the tank where the fuel lines go down in to the tank and to the pump...I have heard of cutting an opening inside the car above the tank...I've even seen a car that was done that way...I guess it's worth a try to save time and money...I'd be ready with a peice of sheet metal and a rivet gun to recover the opening after I cut it out.

T.A. Crews, Did the car that you saw have the cut-out on top of the back area, directly above the tank (centered on the flat area)? Just curious, that is where I was going to cut mine. I am going to hinge it, so that I have access to it in the future, in the event that I have to replace the pump again. I have never seen this done before but thought that it may save alot of headaches and allow for future access.

Mine is in the tank. It was built in Van Nuys, CA. I didnt know that they put any fuel pumps on the motor anymore during those years. I guess they may have done the carbuerated ones that way. My was a cross-fire injected car.

Yes thats correct...in the center of the flat place...thats a good idea to hinge it,if it will work. the only probelm I see is...will the 4 lines that run out of the tank going to let you remove the pump that way....you may have to go under the the car and unclamp the lines...let me know how it goes Please.

I know a few people here in the US who have the Electronic Carb on their 82-84 Z28's Most people would say the carb is the better of the 2 set ups...But we didn't either anymore after 85

I have a CrossFire car and I have never had a problem with it...I turn the Key it starts right up...All I can say is if you have never had a car with it,then how can you say it's bad ...the only thing I see wrong with it is the intake runners being too small...but we must remember it was made for fuel economy motors...Misfire injection...Thats just B.S.

From what I understand the problems with the cross-fire injection were the computer, which you can now get a new prmm for, and the fuel pumps being weak, which you can go to an '85 corvette fuel pump and take care of that.....I guess I will see. The Vettes had it in '82 and '84, (the only '83's were test vehicles, and there is only one left and its in a museum in New York).... so it couldn't be too bad....
