low oil light

the low oil light came on this morning, i checked the stick. it read at the bottom. so i put a quart in. waited about 10 minutes. started the car again. low oil light still on.
curious as to adding a quart and the light is still on, why wouldnt the warning light have came on sooner. also, even though i havent checked the oil level, i kept an eye on the pressure gauge and it has never indicated any issuses. it has roughly 3000 miles on this oil change. Id say over 2000 miles have been driving from ohio to washington dc. being 65-70 mph at 1800 rpms. but in town, theres several times im a lead foot. ive spun the tires about 6 times and chirpped second about 3 times. usualy shift around 3500-4K rpms. the times ive spun first i'd hit around 5800. with this type of driving. should i be conserned about this drop in oil, or for these cars and that driving it is normal? thanks

If your oil level is ok, then check the sensor. It is on your oil pan.

It could be the sensor in your oil pan like Lyle said, or it could just be that your PCM needs to be reset. Pull the fuse for the PCM and wait about 5 min then put it back in and see if that helped.

On my car the sensor directly inputs the light on the instrument panel and the PCM doesn't see any oil condition inputs.

In order to clear the oil light on my 2000 Z....you have to turn the key on the on position but with the engine off and press down the gas pedal three times to the floor...this should reset your light...as far as the drop in oil our cars can eat up alot of oil depending on your driving habbits...just remember the harder you drive the more often you should check things like your oil level and what not. This isn't the first time that i have heard about a camaro sucking up oil...you should be alright, just remember to check it once every couple of weeks to be safe.

I thought that it had to do with the computer.

I think whiteZ916 is talking about the oil change light.

yup we sure do. and does putting in the on position and stepping on the pedal three times really reset the "oil change" light. i was wondering how to do that.

thanks for the input, after the car set for a bit. i went back out to it checked the oil level again. and it was on the full mark, so it was only 1 quart low. i then started the car and the low level light was off. I was starting to think all the sensors on this car needed replaced. thanks again for the help

RE: Low oil light

I had the very same thing happen to me. The oil level is supposedly checked once at startup, but even after waiting several minutes, I was unable to get the low oil light to clear. I resorted to disconnecting my battery for five minutes. This cleared the light, but is overkill in my opinion. I am researching for more information as to what will make the clear. Is it a certain time span after oil is added? Bad sensor? Bad design? Whatever. And I agree with the question of "Why did it wait so long to come on in the first place? Stay tuned.

i think you should disconnect your battery and leave it off for like 5-10 minutes. start your car and drive it. disconnecting the battery should reset the all the electronics and see if it comes back on
