Youngster, you don't buy a 1968 Firebird with a 455 for mileage LOL!! That car is a collectors item and if you don't want it anymore, let me know i will take off your hands.

You shouldn't be looking for gas mileage on this one. Its likely to be around 10mpg. If it has mods, probably less.

Would they have come with a 455 in 68? My cousin had a 400 Firebird, but I didn't see anything with a 455 until 69 or 70...

Nah, the 455 wasn't available until 1969 or 70.

I would agree that if this is your first car, you're probably better off with a 3rd or 4th gen. The 1st gens are simpler, but parts are more expensive and since Firebirds aren't nearly as popular as Camaros, I'm not sure how much there is in the repro market. If the 68 is in really nice shape, then you might consider it, but driving it on a daily basis would cost you twice as much as a 3rd/4th gen.

5k, you got a lot of room to find something...you can get a really clean good running 3rd gen, 5k you can also get a good 93 or 95...

if you look hard enough youcan even find a first generation, not show quality but with 5k you can probably find a running 1st gen, keep lookin, 5k is more then enough to find something good.
