Rainwater in my engine...hmmmm....

Problem: Milky sludge in engine from water/oil mix. Took out the drain plug and more than a gallon of water comes rushing out of the engine. No history or obvious signs of coolant loss. WTF?? It was rainwater. It appears it was a combination of things that resulted in this particular situation. Aftermarket TransAm hood and two poorly installed valve covers the owner tried to cover up with that chemically impervious sealant goop and a new gasket. I bought the car for a buck and started looking it over. The rockers and springs were covered in that milky mix and I found trace amounts of rust on them. Pulled a rod and looked it over. Everything looked well within operating range. My only concern obviously is rust inside the engine. Does anyone have any experience or advice on the water travel into the valve covers and down into the block? What would the probability of rust on the pistons and shaft be? The oil was continuously changed and it always had oil in it, just a bunch of water as well. When I drained the engine, the milk didn’t have any obvious signs of rust or discolor other than the oil. Does this sound like a rebuild or can I get away with some tweeking and flushing?? I Didn't turn the crank yet either. Thanks

Pull the plugs. Flush the water out. Change the oil. try to run it. If it runs, let it idle for a while. Run some engine flush. Change the oil. Run it some more. Change oil. It should be ok after that. Just don't crank it with water in the cylinders. This thread moved to engine tech. What year is the car?

rainwater...

It's a 96, 6cyl. Pretty basic with no real mods to worry about.
