69 Camaro Crossmember Removal
I just removed the 307/Powerglide from my 69 Camaro (See my photo gallery for more pics).
I need to remove the Powerglide crossmember because I will be installing a LT1/4L60E from a 95 Z/28. I tried to slide it forward, backward and side ways but could not get enough clearance to remove it. Do I need to lift the body off of the sub frame to get clearance?

I had the same problem, but you can get it out without unbolting the subframe. I don't remember exactly, but I ended up getting the crossmember kind of diagonal with one end forward. This allowed it to get just enough clearance to be removed. Mine's a 68 and has a four speed, but I would expect the crossmember to be the same length as yours.

Thanks for all of the advise. I will try again this weekend if I get a chance.

Guys I am totally lost on this one, if I remember correctly my trans cross member was held in by two bolts on either side and just dropped down and out of the way? Only on my Chevelle did it slide inside the frame horns. And yes my Camaro (67) is a factory PG car.

The frame rails have pockets in them so that you can't slide the crossmember side to side. There is room to take them out if you work one side forward. Check out the pic and you'll see why. If I remember right, mine did take some coaxing from a rubber mallet. Judging by the picture, I think I was wrong before and the crossmember needs to be worked towards the back of the car...

How very odd, I could have swore mine went in from the bottom?? Then again it has been 6 years since I crawled underneath the monster.

It's possible that they're different on 67s. I know its on top of the frame on 68 and 69's .

ive had 2 79's and 2 78's and they all had the crossmembers on top of the frame. i know this is a first gen question. but i have never sceen a crossmember bolt up from the bottom.

It makes sense...the larger frame supports the weight of the engine and tranny as opposed to the bolts holding the crossmember.
