What size pipe diameter? True dual or single??

I had a true dual exhaust on my 95 Z/28, was not the best installation and I had ground clearance problems.. Sounded great, did not go over the axle (under) had twin cats, twin resonators and twin Aero Turbine 3030's, sounded awesome and had a huge drone at 2200 r's

I put a factory 99 SS 3" system off a wrecked Z.. I believe its a SLP muffler and came with twin (per side) tips, nice system but I feel the car lost maybe a little power, have not dyno'd it yet, thinking I may either change the muffler, although sounds very nice and NO drone... The pipe that goes over the axle has a crimp in it, the installer told me they all do from the factory, to me it looks restrictive..

PLEASE CHOOSE ONE OR MORE ANSWERS IN POLL !

Thanks All ! ! !

Well I really cant vote lol. If your wanting a true dual system go with the 2.5" pipes which is what I was running as well and sounded very good with the Borla turbo mufflers. If your wanting a good catback go with anything that is 3" and if you want a little larger the Mufflex with the Spintech muffler sounds awesome. I had the Borla adjustable system before I went to the true duals and I loved it. I would have kept it but I installed a sump in my gas tank and the muffler wouldnt fit in the stock location because of it

I have a 4" catback on mine. I REALLY love the way it sounds ... however, it seems to hit the body all over the place so there is a bit of noise transfer involved. If you can afford it, go with a Borla system or one of the higher end stainless 3" catbacks.

Thanks everybody for your reply(s)

Glen, sounds like you have a nice set up, what part number are the Borla turbo's? there 2 1/2"??

Paul, Did you notice a performance increase by upgrading to a 4" system, do you have the Mufflex, with Spintech muffler??

THX ALL

I want to say I went with the 2 1/4 so the 2 1/2 pipe would slide over the muffler pieces. Either way here are the 2 1/4 ones Borla 40653 Borla Turbo Series Stainless Steel Mufflers and here are the 2 1/2 as well Borla 40653 Borla Turbo Series Stainless Steel Mufflers

Glen,

Thanks again for your input! Where did you mount your Borla Turbo's? On either side of the the fuel tank just before the rear bumper? As far as the pipes themselves, did you Siamese them on the pass side OR run them on both sides? Do you have an "H or X" pipe? Have any pics??

THX Again
Tom

I had mine straight off the headers with a cutout in front of them. They had a mounting tab welded onto the backside which screwed in with the torque arm bolts (factory location) and then I just had them dumped right after the doors.

I would say true dual for sure. That part in my mind isnt even a question. The specifics, however are a matter of opinion. People can't seem to agree if 2.5" or 3" is better on a stock car. In my case I couldn't find anything showing me a downside to going with 3" besides clearance and I knew I had a good enough exhaust guy to get a 3" system tucked up well. Some say 3" will kill low end power but ive never seen anything to prove it. The low end always looks fine on dynos and I dind't feel any loss in my car. So in all that long windedness....my vote goes for 3" duals with a custom x pipe and the system routed basically like you have an ORY, but never going down to one pipe. In other words, follow the stock routing as close as possible. dumped or over the axle is entirely up to you. Mine is dumped at the axle and it doesnt bother me a bit, others cant stand a dumped system. Kinda a crappy pic but here's mine. The X pipe is closer to an H pipe with the middle taken out of it.

Hey Willy.
That is one sweet looking exhaust ! ! !
What mufflers are you running or are you? What mufflers would you recommend if you were to choose between 2 or different manufactures? I have Hooker shorty's, thinking of going long tube.
Do you have an audio clip? Love to hear it, thanks for the comment/response!!!
Tom

Thanks! The light washes out toward the end of it so you cant really see the mufflers but they are there, lol. I have Power Sticks with a turn down on each one. (http://www.classicchambered.com/). I also used a Lakewood Driveshaft Loop, which runs over top of the pipes instead of under. It really helps a lot also if you go with a custom x pipe instead of an off the shelf one. They're about the same price and a good exhaust guy can make you one that will help you get some extra clearance over a one size fits all. The way this system is set up also allows you to easily extend it over the axle if you ever want to. You probably have some great guys over around Seattle I imagine but if you have a hard time finding a really good exhaust guy thats willing to do it I can refer you to mine here in spokane My system was $400 + mufflers and clamps.

I'll get a clip of my own uploaded when I can but here's another member here with basically the same setup.

I think it depends on the car...flow and back pressure are everything so it depends on how the car is modified.
