Turbo??? Supercharger???

I have a 1981 Chev Camaro with a bbc 454, I was wondering if I can put a turbo or charger on it, and which would be better and possibly where I would find one at a good price. Also any little(inexpensive) things I could do to boost my H/P to kill any Fords or imports I come across!?!?! Also what kind of shops have dinos because I can't find one to get my ride tested??

Get a supercharger, they are better for BBCs. You have power all the time.

the superchargers and turbos are used before using the fuel injection systems.

They are wrong! Turbos and Blowers were around long before there was ever fuel injection.

i would rather have a carburetor on top of my supercharger. that would really atomize the fuel more efficiently than fuel infection

I think Mighty mouse is a little lost.

Blowers have been around since the 1800s. Originaly designed for use in coal mines to move air.

One of the biggest advances for using pressurized air is to use fuel injection as it responds better to changing Conditions. Turbo's never really made it big until the 80s when they were teamed with fuel injection. EFI gave great every day drivability and the best power. Blowers are starting to make a come back now due to the fact that when teamed with a good fuel injection setup they can give better drivability and REPEATABILITY for ease of tuning.

Either A old style fuel mixer(carb) or EFI can make good power. The EFI system will self tune it self to give beter day to day results and best performance while the Fuel mixer tends to loose its tune.

Now I must admit I am just lazy but I have better things to do theise days then tune my car every day. I used to but that was back when duel Quads and a Mr Gasket hood scoop stuck out the hood on my 67 camaro.

as far as Better fuel attomization? EFI wins hands down. How could it not when you are just spitting fuel on spinning rotors with a mixer. I would rather shot a fully attomized pattern on a Hot intake valve over the any day!

If I were to be in your shoes and money was avialable I would go with a EFI turbo setup

If you are on the cheap a 6/71 and twin 450s would do

Good luck!

battling between a turbo and a supercharger is something only you can really answer. you asking us to tell you what you need and not telling us what you are using it for.
i'll tell you some pros and cons and you can then decide what you need.

SUPERCHARGER
PRO'S:
The super charger is great because it is torque on tap no matter how far you gas petal is pushed down. This is good on launchs from red lights and christmas trees at the strip.

CON'S:
It is belt driven so it robs horsepower to make horsepower. also it is limited to the top end power.

TURBO

PRO'S:

Boost is awesome. It uses your exhaust to spool up and boost so it doesnt use horsepower it just produces it. Intercoolers help make the air less denser so it produces even more horsepower

CON'S:

Turbo lag sucks bad. This is when you are out of boost and you punch it but dont go any where. Also you need turbo timers and keep your engine tuned. you need to know what its about to do before it does.

in my opinion superchargers are more street reliable. but if you wanna go turbo some secrets to less lag is lighter flywheel or anything that allows your engine to rev it up more quickly. also alot of turbo dragsters spray nitrious to compensate till boost kicks in.

well man i hope this helps some this is all i know about the 2. there are some things i know i have forgot so if anyone else wants to help me out. good luck.

Hey mighty mouse. I run a 4-71 Weiand supercharger on a 400 small block in a longbed '78 c-10 chevy p/u and LOVE IT!! turbo's have lag, they operate at EXTREME hot temps(sure intercoolers help cool the air going into the motor but the transfer of heat from the exhaust side to the intake of the turbo. They cook oil faster(more frequent oil changes) superchargers run on 90weight and don't have to be changed frequently. Superchargers rule!! And with fuel getting thrown straight on top of spinning rotors of a blower it doesn't matter if it's carbureted or throttle body injected(other than the ease of tuning that stays in tune like 2Fast4LV said). Superchargers are generally cheaper also and require less pieces- no special exhaust headers/manifolds/ intakes. Just blower intake and blower/pulley set up. Good luck,

big blocks and blowers are like; apple pie and ice cream they just go great together, and look so so kool.

bigtime power, and you can hear'em comming, sucken air, a block away.

and even if it's not the fastest car on the street in your area, everbody is gonna know you as the guy.... with the big block camaro, with the blower on top.

p.s. run the car with out a hood
