Which came first?

Ive always wondered this but always forget to ask

which came first, the camaro or firebird? they obviously are similar in design for each generation.. so was the camaro a modified firebird design, or was the firebird a modified camaro design?

The Camaro was introduced first but the Firebird was developed at the same time and was introduced within a month of the camaro, production numbers were actually quite good for both the 1967-68 models of the firebird ,
but for some reason you don't seem to see as many of the birds anymore...

I imagine the reson is that birds was a slight more runner and used more for racing was destroyed. If I rember right from what my dad told me ( he uese to hang around and help big daddy don back in the 70's) the blocks were dif. if a camaro than a chevy. Pontiac made thire own blocks. I could be wrong.
