Ignition "Saftey"???

Hey All,

Listen I don't know how to word this but I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about.
In the past, before I "shelved" the ol '78 to turn it over I would have to push forwrd on the gearshift and sometimes "wiggle" it to get the starter to engage. Well now that I have gone back out to tinker with it I can't even get the old push-and-wiggle trick to work and it it's just dead in the water. I know this some kind of saftey disengage but i don't even know where to begin as far as locating and fixing/by-passing this feature. I little help would be sorely appreciated seeing as how I am not familiar with this aspect of the car. I'm a shade-tree mechanic/tinkerer at best and this is beyond my pay-grade.

Thanks ahead of time,
BHG

The switch that needs adjustment is the neutral safety switch, it only lets the car start in park or neutral. The switch is at the base of the steering column and is activated by backdrive linkage from the shifter. Adjustment is made at the linkage where it attaches to the column in the engine compartment or by moving the switch slightly after loosing its mounting screws. To just jumper out the switch find it at the base of the column down by the firewall in the inside of the car. There will be a plug on it with two purple wires. Tie those two wires together and the car will start in any gear. The plug on it with the green wires is for your reverse lights so leave those alone.
