Question tach stuck?

on my 81 z i have a problem with my tach one time i went past redline and ever sence i wont move back off of where it went to but i havent pulled the dash to look at it i was just wondering what you all thought it could be like the cable or something like that well thanks for your help.

I had a problem like that last year, I found that the tach wire on my distributor had detached itself and after I plugged it back it all was good.

well to add to that i have build a 383 stroker last year and put in and when i rev it up alot past where the tach it stuck it will move just wont go below 5grand i think thats where it is.

In that case I haven't the slightest clue as to what the problem could be. Hopefully someone else could be more help that me.
