SLP MAF question

Threw on a buddy of mine's SLP MAF and Lid tonight and went and drove the TA bout 50 miles cruising. It seems like the car is sluggish until high RPM now. It felt better with the stock stuff. And to make things worse I could barely pull on another friends GT mustang that is stock.
So is the SLP MAF hurting instead of helping? I've always just ran the stock unit so I have no idea. It seemed like it would gain power the more I drove, but it could be in my head

A: Was the Maf from a 00-02? If so SLP claims its not interchangable.

B: M6's do not like Air mods without a tune. They throw codes normally when you port the throttle body alone.

If it's on your 98, ^ is probably right. I would think it should still work, but don't know what the diff is between a 98 MAF and a 00-02 MAF.

Now, the lid will work regardless. It's been proven to add something like 12hp...or around there. I have both on mine. I put both the lid and MAF on my SS and did notice a difference. I've heard, and don't know if this is true, that the car "learns" it's additions and will compensate after a short while of driving. I don't know how true that is, BUT... I haven't done any tune at all w/ my SS and it runs like a champ. I notice a big diff w/ the simple air intake and exhaust mods I've done. The addition of both shouldn't hurt it and should turn out a few hp more than what you had.

I know the lid does not hurt anything, i've had lids on my cars...the MAF is off a 00, but I thought it was 98-00, and then 01-02 wasnt interchangeable?

Ditch the SLP MAF, I have one sitting in my toolbox that I had on my car for about 3 months. I took it off and the car woke right back up. They're garbage.

You are correct in regards to the aftermarket mafs..
The Gm oem 98-02 LS1 F-body Mafs are the exact same part and number..

Except with dealing with Aftermarket Maf's 98-00 and 01-02's are different because the Pcm's use different VE " Volumetric Efficiency " Tables which is the Programming that controls your Maf...

The SLP Maf is just a 85mm GM Delphi Pick-up truck Maf if you remove the SLP sticker you will see that it says Delphi
It needs the adapter Pig tail because those Maf's like Vette maf's have their I.A.T. sensor incoperated inside of them instead of seperately like the F-body system...
And the reason why the Aftermarket maf's are different is because companies like SLP and ect.. install a Resistor inside of the Maf to trick the factory Maf tables into thinking more Air is being passed through the Maf telling your PCM to increase fuel causing your engine to run Rich...
So yeh basically it is a piece of crap that will Skew/ mess up your Pcm calibrations and readings...
It is useless to even think about replacing the Gm Maf unless you are making 450rwhp because your engine doesnt require it and your Maf isnt maxed out with incoming air..

this makes perfect sense especially the running rich part. Stick with just a lid and a good air filter for now.

i had problems with an aftermarket maf as well....constantly throwing codes 5 days after install....rough idle ...sluggishness

as far as i see it, not worth the money for the performance gain, if there is any

many people perfer the stock to the aftermarket, and i think its wise to stick with the stock untill you need more airflow

Or if nothing else, port the ends of the stock MAF and descreen it.

Due to so many of the variables with messing with Maf's descreening.,porting ect. being such a hit or miss thing...
I wouldnt even touch touch the Maf or modify it without atleast consulting your tuner before hand to make sure that they are willing or capable of making the proper adjustments afterwards..

Then if you want to upgrade to a bigger Maf you should go with a GM Z06 or 6.0 truck Maf..
Which is really unecessary unless you are a Head, Cam , 90mm intake car.

Sounds like what my car did. Hey, it was free so why not try it? haha
I ditched it and I can tel it woke up. I've always ran a descreened stocker with no problems, and shot nitrous through it, so yea EFF a SLP MAF.

I know what your e-mail address is!!

Nah, leave it as-is, descreening it isn't going to make a huge power difference anyway.

Here's my 2 cents:

I am putting the STOCK MAS and throttle body back on this weekend. The *** MAS and the *** throttlebody did nothing for performance, but gas mileage dropped from 18 mpg to about 10. A complete waste of $600 and hundreds of dollars of gas money.

Buyer beware, thoroughly check out all aftermarket stuff before you buy, most is junk.

Sorry to be so negative, but my wallet is much thinner because I bought the hype.
