Ram AIr

I've been considering hole sawing the front of the scoop on my 79' Z-28. Maybe 4-1" holes just to get more airflow. This may sound stupid, sense I haven't given it alot of thought but now that it's stuck in my head have any of you guys done any true ram air on this year utilizing the scoop?

It is not a bad idea. Now you need to build an air box to use the air.

That's where I'm at. I was wondering if there was such an after market item available or if anyone has made one up that looks nice and would share the plans.

It really wont give you much in hps, so is it worth cutting holes in that poor thing, or the trouble it would be to do it???

ANYTIME YOU CAN GET COOLER AIR INTO YOU MOTOR YOUR GOING TO MAKE MORE H.P..EVER NOTICE ON A COOL SPRING OR FALL DAY WHEN THE TEMP IS AROUND 60 deg. SHE RUNS LIKE A RAPED APE? IF YOU WANT TO TRY AND BUILD A AIR BOX TO HELP UTILIZE THE COOLER AIR. START WITH CARDBOARD AND DUCT TAPE UNTIL YOU GET ALL YOUR CLEARANCES. THEN FAB ONE OUT OF SHEET METAL. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR PROJECT...

I had to make a ram air set up for my 78 Z my Big Block made the top of the carb go through the hood but I still wanted to use the stock hood, luckly I use a holley 800 cfm HP series carb (no air horn ) so I cut a round hole in the hood under the scoop allmost to the edge of the scoop and made a plate to slide over the opening then cut a hole the same size as the carb top to sit on the carb when the hood is closed , on top of the plate I epoxied a 1/4" mesh screen in a dome .. kinda like the old vette L88 style set up, then I opened up the inside of the scoop cut down the excess flash and also cut the scoop opening out and epoxied another mesh screen into the opening, now you are probably wondering what did I use for a filter?? well , I went to the hardware store and purchaced a couple of cheep furnace filters (the fiberglass kind) and removed the cardboard edges and folded the material to fit under the scoop over the mesh on the slide plate and behind the mesh at the front of the scoop... but does it work ?? well I ran the car at the local track and nothing moved and it runs good .. only draw back is to change the filter the scoop has to come off. and if the plate slides too far you have to adjust it to get it to close right..

I use that moroso air pan and a 4.5 cowl induction hood. Car picked up about 2 tenths in the quarter.
