Going from the stock y-pipe to an aftermarket one IMO is not really worth the $200-$300. If anything, hold off on getting a y-pipe until you get longtube headers, because you will need to replace it again anyway because the stock one doesn't fit headers.
The shape of the pipe does change the flow pattern. Any change in shape or any additional bend causes additional friction and may cause turbulent flow. The X-section shape does contribute to flow pattern and has different effects on fluid (air/gases/liquids) head losses. To what degree it helps I'm not sure, but the stock pipe is really flat as compared to the replacement pipe.

I think the contact problem is worse than SLP thinks it is. Mine does it as well and I have the lid seated as far back as possible. Here's a picture of why the lid is rubbing my hood. You can see that it is making contact with the cowling that covers the radiator and I see no easy method of lowering that.

I intend to attempt heat / denting the section of the lid to let it sit a fraction of an inch lower. SLP should recognize the problem so their subsequent lids quit doing this.

Wow, thats a lot of contact. I'll have to check mine out. I don't know why I get contact...since I should have more clearance with a Z28 hood. The problem is the contact on the right of the picture, right?

Here's a pic from the side. Everything looks seated properly to me. Not sure where the lids base would rub.

Yes, it's just one significant spot on the right side of the picture but the way a fitment works is once one thing goes down something else has interference. I'm going to try to heat the bulging part of the lid enough to see if it can be softened. If it can then I will likely be able to distort it enough to get some clearance.

I did the SLP Y-pipe after doing the cat-back, and it did make a nice difference on the throttle response- if you are going headers it would be better to wait and get the pipe that fits them- but it DID make a noticeable difference in mine-

I did the SLP lid, after having done the free ram air- didn't notice that big a difference. When I did the FTRA, I noticed it at highway speeds, crisper throttle response- not a big difference off the line, buty cruising it was noticable.

Engines are basically air pumps, so any breathing improvements have to help
