Anyone done this mod? Any results?

Feel free to move this to the Induction forum if Mods think it belongs there.

But, here's my question. Has anyone here done this mod before...by removing the styrofoam like black material inside the areas highlighted? I was wondering what it would look like w/out the material inside and if it does anything for performance....like allow more cold air flow into the engine bay, or push more air into the front end cooling the radiator more, etc.

I had thought about taking out that styrofoam but don't want it to look bad. However, if anyone has noticed any increased performance by doing this, let's hear it!!!

I borrowed a pic from squirrleshires photoshoot. Hope you guys/the owner doesn't mind.

i would imagine youd get a little more air flow/less resistance. I wouldnt think it would be too great of an increase, but every little bit helps.
just keep in mind that you wouldnt have that foam there to protect from rocks/debris

Well considering there is a piece of plastic in the way just past it, kind of a waste. Good in theory though.

Ahhh...didn't know there was plastic beihind it. I'm going to have to take a real good look at the SS. Maybe the plastic can be moved or cut too.

Then again, Greg made a point about the styrofoam protecting the area from rocks/debris.

I was thinking the same thing one day and ended up coming to the conclusion that there's definitely gonna be a condenser then a radiator behind there before you even get to the engine compartment so it's probably there to protect that stuff (LAS).

If you take out everything down to the condensor and radiator you might be able to allow extra flow over them lowering your temps, but you'd need to put something back over the hole like a mesh to keep out rocks. Then you'd also wanna paint the cond/radi as you'd then have an aluminum cond/radi showing in that hole.

The Idea you mention is what they call the " Big Gulp Ram Air "
A guy in Texas was making a kit like that about 2 years ago for around 4-500 bucks...
I actually considered it for my car but the proof of gains at the track with the kit were comparable with the SSRA kit..

Might be a good place for a twin turbo setup, but very interesting idea.

Hmmm, thats weird, cause my SS came stock with a hole on each side stock, What year is yours, I wonder if it has changed thru the years. Mine is a 99, I just did the free ram air mod and the motor seemed to like that. ya know what, the more air ya get in there the better, I think you should get the foam that looks like mine, just to keep it lookin sharp ya know.

the foam is crash saftey foam....remove it at your own risk

only a wind tunnel will prove how much air really goes through that part, but the turbo kit sure looks cool there

mustang dyno (in case you don't know, it has nothing to do with the Ford car) could easily tell... and much cheaper than wind tunnel time, I'm sure.

A dyno is not the correct way to test a forced air kit. The car needs to be moving. Again its not really worth the effort. I personally would not remove the safety foam unless I had no choice, ie front mount intercooler. Also why would you spent 400-500 for soemthign with a $5 piece of sheet metal and about 30 bucks in flex pipe. You have a throttle body that can only flow 75mm worth of air, do you really think two 4" intakes are gonna improve your air flow that much???? This is the reason I went with the SLP cold air pack. I just wanted a cooler source of air. Now Keep in mind the car is designed to breath air from the underside. If you remove the plastic piece you disrupt the airflow into the radiator, not so good of an idea in my opinion.
