AC problem

So I just bought a 99 Z28. Everything is great on the car except the AC does not work. The guy had not used the AC for over a year he said. We tried putting some freon in it but it all leaked out. The compressor did kick on though so that's good. There is a small hole in the line that goes from the little canister thing (don't know the technical name) back towards the firewall. Anyway, we figured out how to disconnect this line but I will need a new one. Will a dealer be able to get me one? I am going to check sometime this week when I have time. Would something like JB weld possibly fix the hole? If not I will for sure be buying a new line. When I go to put freon back in I was told that I have to vacuum the line. Is this necessary? What would happen if I just put in some freon? Lastly, will I need to add any oil to the system? Thanks any help.

The line is easy enough to replace. The problem is you will need to replace the Dryer/Accumilator canister as well. Most likely the silicon bag is bad in it now. You will need to place the system under a vaccum and make sure it holds for a min of 20 min. That will garrentee there are no more leaks. Then its oil and recharge. BTW you dont have Feon thats R12. You have R134a. You need a licence to buy R12. I dont recall the accual amount of 134 but there is usually a spec under the hood. As for the oil it should be around 8oz of PAG oil. be sure you use only PAG oil on a 134 system.

I wouldent mess with the ac if I was you buy the time you buy the vacume and the gagues and then figure out that the pump is bad you have spent more than what it would have caust to have some one do it in the first place, and if anything goes wrong with it you can take it back. I have installed may ac system in cars ( cars that didnt come with any ac in the first place) and I took my car to the shop just cause I no longer have any acess to all the tools now.

but if you cant help but want to try
if you can get a vacume pump you can buy ac charging kits at the auto store for cheep. you will want the two gague style gagues with the high and the low side on it 3 lines comming out one red (high side) one blue (low side) and one yellow to hook up the the vacume pump and later the freon.

after you fix the leak
you will just have to hook up the pump vacume should be a high and a low side line ( one is bigger and one is smaller that hook up on your ac lines) thier will be another line to hook to the compressor a yellow line( maby) open only the low side of the gagues the blue side and vacume it for and hour and let it sit for 15 minutes if your vacume gague goes up you still have a leak some where.

if the vacume all goes well then make shure your gagues get closed so you don't loose your vacume and hook on your R 134 to the yellow line from the gagues crack open the top of the yellow line near the gagues to bleep out any air in the line some 134 will come out. have some one start the car with the ac on high fan on high at the same time you open the low side of the gagues the blue side watch your gagues when your high side gague the red gague reaches 120 shut of the the low side gague from letting in any more R 134 if the high side gague does not raise then the compressor isnt turnig on you can tell if it does or not by looking at the compressor to see if it ingagues if it does not ingague it could be a cupple things but I dont think I need to go into more detail if you get this far drop me a line lol.
