I used to have a 3.8 2000 Camaro and I wanted to do the same engine swap. It was going to cost me TOO much. I was told by a Chevy master mechanic that I would need the LS1 motor ( of course ) , a new radiator, possible mods to the auto tranny, timing belt, water pump, belts and a A LOT of mechanic hours were also going to be charged to pull the V6 motor out and install the V8. Oh, almost forgot, add a better suspension too. Remember, a new LS1 engine alone cost $5,800 ( at Jegs ). Man hours are about $50 an hour and he said it was going to take about 2 - 3 days. Do what I did, raise your insurance deductable and get an LS1. not worth it in the long run. You might as well get a Z28 and transform ity into a SS clone. That might make you feel better with your new insurance rate. Maybe some one else had better luck than I. But this is my TRUE story. No B.S. Good luck.

you don't have to get an ls-1, also used engines might be a route worth pursuing.

It could be done on a budget somewhat(assuming you already have the parts), but unless you do, I would just buy one w/a v-8. Remember what I said about the insurance thing a while back. I would think about it more before jumping off into that project.

probably too much trouble b/c you dont really want to buy a cheap ass 10 bolt rear end either. you want a 12 bolt or 9 inch! trust me. id say trade it in on a z.

Hey all,

New to the forum but after reading your post I was wondering if you checked into a blower for your V6. More balls, same low (lower) insurance. Just a thought.

Sounds like the cheapest and best advice to a person who has a 3.8 and wants 5.7 power.
but, you can get as much horse power as a LS1 but the torque will NOT match. But I still think this is the BEST idea for a 3.8 owner to do if they do NOT want to by a LS1 equipt Camaro. Maybe add nitrious too ( 50 shot w/blower ) nothing too crazy.

Try to get the blower and all the parts off of a Grand Prix GTP. I've seen them on e-bay for a very affordable price in the past.

I have a 02 V6 5 speed and am thinking of doing the LS1 conversion. The price isn't really that bad in comparison to buying a V8. my suggestion is to get a used drivetrain. You can buy the drive train from Speedautomotive.com and that price will cost you anywhere from 3200 to 6200. you will still need a package that includes a radiator and gas lines whathave you. They told me the package runs around 900 dollars on top of the drivetrain. they will also do the swap for you with total labor costing you around 1400. if you do it rigt you can get a motor with only 50k or so miles on it installed and fully functional for around 6100 dollars. not bad in retrospect because a new z would cost around 24000. if you do decide to do the conversion let me know how it goes.
