Tranny issue please help

Hey every one. I haven't really used this site much...but I think things are about to change with that. Its not like (stunt forums..where every one just !#*!#*!#*!#* talks lol) You all seem to give good advice and that's what im looking for.

I have a 98 ls1 camaro with a 6 speed, since I got the car if im really getting into it fourth gear will grind going into gear. At first I thought oh !#*!#*!#*!#* bad syncro? but...then I just thought maybe its got something to do with this ridiculous skip shift !#*!#*!#*!#*...

with that said in the last couple weeks Ive had a problem with fifth gear grinding. I may have miss shifted 2nd or 3rd once each since ive owned the car. The car has about 72k on it. I dont think sycro's should be going? two time I was trying to down shift out of 5th and it didnt even want to come out of gear and then once it was out the shifter was hard to move even in Neutral.

I checked my clutch fluid and it is black. I know I need to change it. I sucked out what I could from the resivoir and put some new break fluid in. Do you guys think that would attribute to so much trouble?

Please give me a hand! Im in the process of buying a house and really hope I dont need a tranny rebuild

Adding new fluid in the res won't help if you don't bleed the system. I would start there and bleed till you have new fluid through it, as it could be a slight pressure created by the clutch not fully disengaging. This would be the easiest and cheapest to try first.

I'm wondering if your clutch is not going out. I don't think the dark fluid would do this, but more strange things have happened lol. If you can, jack the rear end up, and start the car with your foot on the clutch. If the wheels start to spin, it should start really slow. Make sure to have it in 4th gear also btw. If the tires start to spin rather quickly, then either your clutch is about to go (could also cause slipping), or your master/slave is going bad.

The only other thing is just what you suspect, the syncro's and you will need a rebuild.

depends on who you go to, if they are nice they will charge you parts and a little labor, most rebuilds will cost 800-1k+
