Question Smoke at start-up?

Just changed my plugs and wires yesterday, and I was outside when my wife started it up to there was a little puff of blue smoke that came out of the right tail pipe. I also changed the PCV valve when I did the plugs. Also, the new plugs are gapped at .40. The NGK's that I pulled out were gapped at .58. I also had SLP LM installed the day before. I have never seen ANY smoke come out of the car before, could it have something to do with the work I have done on it this week? I only have 34k on the clock, and I had oil changed about 500 miles ago using Mobile 1. It was not a lot of smoke, but I have never seen it before. Any thoughts?

It's hard to say what it could be. Keep an eye on your oil consumption.

Yea, I noticed my PCV lines had some oil in them as well as the old PCV valve. I know that is normal, I just have never noticed that little puff of smoke before.

Kind of made me a little nervous...

I Think there is a mod at IU to help with that.

Your motor is toast. I read an article that says that NGK plugs are prone to create so much heat in the combustion chamber that they litterally melt the oil rings, which causes it to burn oil!

NO seriously, I am just kidding! That was a good whopper though wasn't it!! LS-1 are notorious for puffing out blue smoke at start up, hell mine was doing it at 15K. We also have to live with the notorious piston slap on start-up. Don't worry about it, just check the oil regularly and make sure it don't run dry. This is why I change my oil every month!

Now in all honesty that does not sound normal Matt. It sounds to me like there is fuel that is still dripping into the manifold after startup. On older 1st and 2nd gen that employed a Quadra-Jet use to have this problem. When the car would sit, the fuel would leak through the base plate and flood the engine causing a hard start. You may want to inspect the plugs if you get a free minute, just pull a couple of them out and see if any of them are wet and black and smell like raw gas. You could also be due for a fuel injection service as well. If you do end up doing that I recomend a fuel filter as well.

Rick

Smoke is all gone now. It must have been something with the PCV valve/new plug change because in addition to the little puff of smoke, I smelled what seemed like a oil burning smell for a couple of hours which is also gone. It all seems to be okay now.
