Virgin Z-28!

O.k. guys and girls. Here's the situation. I got a '98 Z28, A4. The only thing that's been done to it is the K & N and free mods. What are the best and most effective first mods. Please keep in mind I'm on a budget, but I'm open to any suggestions. Some times or proof of performance enhancement would be greatly appreciated just so I'll kind of know what to expect.
Thanks.

when you descreen the maf, aren't you opening your engine up for possible trash ? I mean, how much performance do you really get out of it? Is it worth the risk?

What about the Granatelli? Did you buy the 85mm? What kind of total hp gains did you get from the descreening? Are there any particular instructions for taking the screen out?

Sorry you wasted your $ I was lucky and had friends that told me that first.
Here is an example: this kid at the track the other day had a 2002 Z28, A4 stock except for a straight pipe replacing the muffler, and a K&N filter, that was it! and ran 13.02 @110 mph NICE!
Then I showed him how to do the free mods, so he decided to descreen his MAF.
The next pass was 12.92 @ 111mph
Then the 3rd pass was 12.86 @111.5mph
I think the proof is in the pudding as the saying goes!

Actually, 1 rwhp is nothing. Every run on the dyno will vary a few rwhp. So, I doubt you gained any power from descreening it. Unless you ran 15-20 dyno runs with and without the screen, then average them out. Then compare both averages, and if you still have a difference of 1 rwhp between the two, then i guess it helped.

Also, descreening the MAF on 98's usually will cause problems. I've looked into this on CamaroZ28.com and almost everyone with a 98 A4, had PCM issues when the descreened the MAF. I would not recommend it. The stock MAF can handle up to about 450 hp, so just leave it alone till you make that much power. It saves stressing over PCM problems, invisible hp gains, and wasted money.

Don't get me wrong. I think the MAF is a good mod, just one that should be done after most other stuff.

I appreciate the warning about possible PCM problems, but I've already descreened my maf and experienced a pretty significant gain. Not to say that some people haven't experienced problems, but I would certainly recommend it.
Peace.
