electronic shift control

hey guys, my tranny recently went out and I heard that since the automatics are heavily computer driven the ECS might be to blame. Where is this located and how would you check it?

The trans is controlled by the PCM and it will store codes related to problems experienced. Those can be retrieved by a suitable scan tool. Don't assume that it is bad and replace it for nothing. It is located just in front of the firewall on the right hand side under the hood. What was wrong with the trans and how many miles? What year is your car?

My car is a 1998 z28, it had 70,000 miles on it when I bought it. It was shifting really hard so the guy knocked the price down b/c of this, anyway. About 7 months later I have already changed the fluid and filter and still shifting hard. One morning I am pulling out of the parking lot at work and I hear a pop, the car then hesitates to shift out of low gear, I have to let up on the gas peddle to do it, and I find out that R no longer works. My mechanic is quoting around 800 to rebuild it, but I have found a used tranny for half that, has 40,000 miles on it and comes with a six month warranty. I am leaning towards putting in a replacement tranny, but I am curious if the problem will still be there. Will an OBDII scanner pull the appropriate codes?

Yes that scanner should pull the codes you want no problem. I dont think that the problem has anything to do with the PCM, it sounds like something just let go in the tranny. Our 4L60E trannies arent known to be real strong. If the guy that had it before you was hard on it then Id say it was just wore out. Id go with a replacement tranny and not worry about it.
