Trip Odometer

I noticed a couple days ago that my trip odometer automatically resests it self back to 0 somewhere between 15-30 miles, anybody know what the heck is going on?

I assume you are talking about your 99? This happened to me only it was doing it every time I turned the car off. Also I noticed just every once in a while when I started the car the gauges would swing wildly and then return to their proper position. I called the dealer as I had heard or 99 model cars had some problems with the interment clusters going bad. They said it was that or I had a weak battery. My car was starting fine but since it had the original battery and I wanted a Optima "Red Top" anyway I changed it out. This fixed the problem immediately! Have not had any issues since. I hope this helps.

Any recommendations about this Optima "Red Top"? Does it hold more voltage than a stock one? It looks pretty sharp in your Camaro, so I thought it'd be a nice appearance touch, but also, alot more reliable!

Not more volts, more amps. All car batteries are 12 volt it is the cold cranking amps and how they are built that sets batteries apart. It has 800 cold cranking amps and is a "jel" battery. It does not have any water in it. The stock battery was only 600 cca. I think it looks good and goes with my red/black colors and I hear they are built very well. I have used nothing but Interstate batteries for years and they are great. I just don't think the old green top Interstate would have looked as good.

I have the old green top interstate...not a huge fan, but it works alright. I too have the black/red theme going, so I think the battery would look pretty pimp. I'll save it for when my battery takes a dump!

Well i started my car this morning and yup, the milage is at 0 again, i just might go in and get this battery, its a good one i presume? You also mentioned something about your gauges spiking, i havent noticed anything like that, they only other thing i noticed was that when i first got my car, when i would hit lock or unlock from the remote the parking and fog lights would flash, recently most of the time just the parking lights flash and the fog lights dont, they do sometimes but not most of the time... what do you think thats all about?

Yes it is a good battery. I have seen them priced as low as $109.00. A good mechanic friend of mine told me that today's cars are very dependent on the correct voltage for the computer to function properly. Even when the car is running and the alternator is trying to charge the battery and support the electrical system your car can suffer performance wise if you have a weak battery. Having said that, I know our 99 model cars had this specific problem with the instrument cluster. I have even read a TSB from GM about the this and they even issued a recall on some of the cars. I called my dealer and gave them my Vin # and they said my car was not part of the recall. They then advised me to buy a new battery which I did even though I was not really having any problems besides the trip meter resetting and occasionally the gauges jumping around at start-up. You can try having your battery tested, or call the dealer with your VIN and see if your car is covered under this recall. If your battery is old I would think that it is the problem and I would try replacing it. Plus the "Optima" battery looks really nice.

I think the problem you are having with your lights not flashing could also be due to a weak battery. Another good reason to replace it is you don't want to get stuck somewhere! I hate it when that happens lol.
