I dont like how these people try to take slow cars and make them fast. They are made for gas mileage not racing. Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, etc. are sports cars. Built to go fast, not haul the kids to the public pool. The only reason these companies make aftermarket mods for these ricers is to make money. Do you think they actually care if these ricers and their owners look like retards.

Man don't even put a camaro or a mustang in a class with a Corvette. If you don't wanna look stupid then get a corvette and modify a real performance car. Everyone knows the firebird and camaro are just a poor mans vette. They're just heavier, less quality engineered, and handle worse. A vette will smoke and out handle one of those cars all day long. Theres no comparison. The corvette or doge viper is a track ready performance car. Mustangs, and Camaros and Firebirds are the budget performance cars. They're sold on the basis that they make people THINK they're driving a race/track car lol. There isn't but two ways to look at it logically. Either everyone who does what they can to make a car faster is ok or Anyone who doesn't modify the car with the utmost potential for quarter mile speed looks like a moron. Its that simple. You can't just draw the line for "respect" at the car you choose to drive ROFL. I mean how can you say someone who buys a 13.8 second Z28 at 28k is more respectable than someone who buys a 15.0 second rsx for 24k and puts it into the 13s with the other 4k? Either you're the biggest fish on the food chain or you're not. I fail to see the logic behind taunting a smaller fish when you're something elses meal too. Criosdaidhlaoch, Like I said it is a STOCK caprice with a few bolt on's. This means STOCK engine with a few bolt ons. Stock cam, heads, exhaust manifolds, injectors, distributor, airbox. So in reality. I only did what the ricers do-exhaust, airfilter(they actually do whole airbox), and mild computer work. and BTW, why are you posting crap about the camaro as the poor man's race car, I agree with you on the vette's performance capabilties being superior but this IS a camaro board-do you or don't you like yours?. LS1 camaro's and lightly modded LT1's can smoke a lot of vettes(maybe not newer Z06's but look what you get for the money.) dollar for dollar, the camaro's are fast and were still BUILT for performance.
Imports suck, parts cost significantly more just to run slower than a stock camaro, they break a lot more often cause they were never meant to go fast (CV axles, transaxles). Besides maybe if more people were loyal to the U.S. made products and BOUGHT AMERICAN, the camaro might not have died. But these days not many people have loyalty like this. I personally buy as much american as possible, even if you can't buy everything made here-I'm going to keep MY money in the U.S. and support OUR economy. I own 3 GM's, a harley, american made tractor/lawn equipment. I agree with you on one thing and that's the big fish theory but why mount a minnow when you could mount a bass(camaro) or a tarpon(vette) Last edited by emile turks; 08-29-2003 at 08:39 AM.. |

Its not that I have a problem with any car its the misinformation that is so bad.
Imports are way more reliable than domestics. Hands down theres no competition there. And the only time they have problems with tranaxles and the such is a full on trailor queen with slicks. I've seen plenty or rwd muscle cars on slicks snap axles at the track. And dollar for dollar most imports can be made to out run a z28, firebird, or a especially a mustang. The srt-4 is only 19k and it already runs low 14s. The Nissan spec-v has a turbo kit out now, puts down 260 wheel hp on the stock engine internals with this kit. Kit costs 3500 and the car itself can be had for 17000 brand spanking new and loaded. Where else you going to get 260 wheel hp for that price? Not to mention this is its reliable hp. The guy runs 250 to the wheels every day. A 2700 lb car with 260 wheel hp will spank any muscle car, cept maybe the viper or a new vette. Thats way cheaper than a z28 or a mustang gt. Not to mention its faster or at least just as fast in a worse case scenario, plus its differen't. I dont' know if you've ever been smoked by a civic or have smoked somebody while in one but the look on their face is priceless. Sometimes being different, going against the grain for the sake of challenge, and being the underdog is part of the fun. None of us are going to be the fastest car in the world so why act like people are stupid for modifying a car that has less potential? Every one of us is modifying a car that is a joke to someone else so I don't see what makes us any better. And parts used to be just as expensive for muscle cars as they are imports now. The difference is simply supply and demand, import prices are dropping as the demand picks up. I'm not trying to argue that fwd imports are better DRAG racing cars than a muscle car, its just incorrect to say that these imports are wasting more money to go slower. Cause they're not in alot of cases. For the same price I could buy a new muscle car thats probably void of any options, I could be driving a loaded import that will smoke its arse. To put a car in the 9s is a different story. But how many people actually have a 9 second car? Budget is the most often determining factor in how fast someones car is. Muscle cars dont' have the "upper hand" or the "logic" in all price ranges. For the 25k to 30k range you can't beat modifying an import. I can't think of one muslce car for that price range that won't be whipped by a descent import with modifications for the same price or less. If you've got 40k to spend, then yes, buy you a new z28, do some light mods to it, and it'll smoke arse all day. But not many people can spend that much money on a car. Not to mention most domestics and imports aren't even "domestic" or "import". Nissan has a plant not too far from where I live. Alot of domestic parts are made overseas and then shipped to the US to be assembled. Hell Ford owns Mazda. Theres no clear cut domestic or import any more as far as labor, etc is concerned. Most are frankeinstiens. Alot of imports today are built for performance as well. Just not straight line drag racing performance although some do quite well in that area as well. To put all import cars in the "grocery getter" category is incorrect and uneducated. I'm a car lover. But I'm not brand loyal to the point of being blind, and I don't harp or knock other people for driving a slower car or modifying a slower car. Again, you have just as much business knocking on someone driving one of those slower stock cars as a corvette owner does knocking on you for modifying a slower stock car. Sorry I'm not trying to start a fight here but if the 360 lb guy calles me a squirt because I'm only 260, I don't get off turning around to the 160 lb guy and calling him a squirt. |

PS I've considered getting a caprice as a project car. I like what I think is the newer ones. There big, look pretty aerodynamic, and they look like they'd be comformtable as a Cadillac. Not a bad looking car at all. They should be pretty fast too I think they have a v8 but I don't know what the curb weight on em is.

Crois, Well, I'm going to drop this topic as you seem to love imports more than anyone else on this board. I have to definitely disagree on the reliablity factor. The big caprice has 110, 000 HARD miles and is still NOT burning oil or leaking it, still original transmission. ONLY parts it's EVER needed was horn buttons, O2 sensors, a water pump, battery(obviously, it is a 92), and alternator. On the OTHER hand, my girlfriend just dumped her 2000 nissan sentra and in 40,000 babied miles it went through: oil dipstick got brittle and broke off in engine and when I brought the dipstick in the nissan parts guys laughed and said"let me guess nissan sentra 1.8 right?"-what does THAT tell you, also catalytic converter went bad, 02 sensors, cam sensor(that's what nissan called it-since I don't touch imports, I don't know what the part did but being broken imobilized the car), horns died and other problems I can't remember cause it's late here in n.o. but average it went in 8 times in 40K miles;not what I call "reliable". So, the last thing I buy is that american cars aren't reliable. Sure imports used to last 300K but now I think they ride on their name and I HAVE seen many eclipses(mainly), sentras, civics(a lot) break transaxles right off the line. Sure, I've seen a few american cars bust up but not NEARLY as many. Now dirttrack, sure they bust up some axles but those are heavy cars abused on rutted up tracks down here and NO imports race dirtrack down here- ford's 2.3 4-bangers rule the "mini-stock" circuit.
But, back the real reason WE are on this board, dude. Lets talk F-body/GM- so what do you drive/work on??Since you are in the LT1 section do you have one? If so, what's worked for you. |

BTW, the ONLY import that has ever come close to any of my cars was an integra with a huge turbo, intercooler and all kinds of crap on it(so he had more than the 22K it took me to buy my STOCK 97 Z and I pulled away from him another car length every gear I hit. We even ran 5 times, his choice I even let him roll first two of the last times to handicap him and make sure no excuses. Sure he was fast for an import but that is a lot of time and money just to get walked by a 285 horse stock Z with a not so good racer rowing a 6 speed(me). Now, you want to talk about funny looks is when I beat civics and crap with the caprice which has whitewall 75SR tires and wheel covers and the flowmasters are turned down under the car so from the outside it really looks like paw-paw's car(which mod wise is so mild it may as well be paw-paw's-exhaust, coil, airfilter and chip on a 305)OR check out my web page, anilating imports, older cobra stangs, and even lots of mild LT1's with a longbed 78 chevy truck with a supercharged 400 smallblock with rotted fenders and looks like an old worktruck is a blast. So, I hear you on beating stuff "sleeper" style. When I repaint the truck it is losing the flames and mags and going back to it's original color with stock wheels(stretched 8-9 inch one in rear) with hub caps and the only thing hot looking will be the cowl induction hood cause I can't hide the blower any other way. The older I get the more I like that "surprised" look you speak of, it is addictive and embarrasing for them. Feel free to check out the WWW under my post and you will see my world. Chat with you later. BTW, the signature's items have all been done lately.

"Crois, Well, I'm going to drop this topic as you seem to love imports more than anyone else on this board."
Its not that. I just don't see why anyone has to hate imports or even dislike imports because they're imports or vice versa. I'm pretty sure that if you think poking fun at people or disrespecting them for using something that doesn't have super potential is ok that I could find quite a few things to poke fun at you about. ":BTW, the ONLY import that has ever come close to any of my cars was an integra with a huge turbo, intercooler and all kinds of crap on it(so he had more than the 22K it took me to buy my STOCK 97 Z and I pulled away from him another car length every gear I hit" ROFL well I hate to bring the bearer of bad news but if he had what all you say he had then he mades bad driver look like a compliment. If he was running a gs-r or a type-r that with a turbo that wasn't even half decently installed you'd have gotten arse whoopin city. I'm not trying to taunt you I'm just telling you alot of "domestic" knowlege doesn't mean you know imports too. Even a decently tuned Saturn, yes I said a Saturn, as in a 1.9 liter DOHC Saturn Coupe can run mid to low 14s on just 5 lbs of boost with a turbo set up. Stock internals. Street tires and a cat back exhaust. I could try and find the website of the guy who had one if you're interested to learn something. But unfortunately as of right now it seems you just would rather bash anything other than a domestic muscle car driver. ![]() I don't really know what it is we're arguing about. I'll be honest with you, it seems that you think we should all dislike imports just because they're not domestic lol. While thats your opinion and you definatly have the right to it I see alot of misinformation, alot of incorrect assumtions, and alot of wrong stereotyping. While that may be your opinion that doesn't make it so. And I always try to assume that the general population want to be educauted or be told the truth, which is why I'm trying to shed a little more experienced light on the "import" thing. Some people don't seem to understand that import drivers love to race cars just as much as domestic drivers do. They just choose a different' platform to race. I fail to see how that makes them any less of a person or racer, or means they deserve disrespect. PS The caprice sounds like an awesome sleeper. What does that year model look like? (bodystyle) Whats your best quarter mile in it? |

First of all technical goof-up above. I don't know what happened.
"Even a decently tuned Saturn, yes I said a Saturn, as in a 1.9 liter DOHC Saturn Coupe can run mid to low 14s on just 5 lbs of boost with a turbo set up. Stock internals. Street tires and a cat back exhaust. I could try and find the website of the guy who had one if you're interested to learn something. But unfortunately as of right now it seems you just would rather bash anything other than a domestic muscle car driver. "No, Saturn is american. I'm just supporting my own country's economy the most I can. I take pride in buying american made(not just american "put together with all import parts") and respect people who keep the money in the country more than people who bash camaro's as poor man's vette on a CAMARO board and on a "who would you rather smoke" thread that I didn't even start.(BTW, poor man's vette is a pretty harsh stereotype when you preach about not stereotyping others and misinformed info) Look at what people replyed, Crois. Most on this board DON'T like imports. Sure, they have a few fast ones out there. I know it CAN be done and even see what's out there for them and how much it cost since jeg's and summit started selling everything from Jackson superchargers to High torque CV shafts, sure the bulk of my knowlegde IS in "domestic" vehicles, including 4x4's and fords too. "I don't really know what it is we're arguing about. " Well, let's don't then. You think you have some info you'd like to share to "educate me". My e-mail is all over my profile and webpage. ":I'll be honest with you, it seems that you think we should all dislike imports just because they're not domestic lol." Most people on this board are tried and true camaro lovers and don't like fords, imports as you will notice on this board. So,generally speaking, your stay on the board won't be the most fun for all if you just play devil's advocate to whatever people say and don't contribute some GM-friendly chat.. PS The caprice sounds like an awesome sleeper. What does that year model look like? (bodystyle) Whats your best quarter mile in it? [/B][/QUOTE] I don't normally drag strip race it-it's just a fun daily driver that isn't as fast as my other two and I'm sure most "correctly" modded turboed or nitroused cars would eat my lunch but as of now, I haven't encountered any while I'm driving it. Sooner or later I'm sure I will and everyone has their day to win and lose. It looks like the old police cruisers before the new FWD impala took over. So, you never answered- do you have an LT1 or what is your choice of 4 wheel toy. Well, have a good one and e-mail me that saturn link if you'd like-It would be interesting to see.
